A nice change after four previous boring years aboard the Shenandoah. However, it's unfortunate that it's due to an armed conflict. It was much better reading about the rescue efforts and assistance to locals provided by the Revenue Cutters in Alaska.

I know the feeling. I have a sense of displacement. I'm off Jaffa, modern Israel. The map I'm using shows it as the Coast of Syria. We fired a salute with the Turkish flag at the fore. Where am I: Israel, Ottoman Syria or Turkey?
(Ottoman Syria was part of the Ottoman Empire in those days.) ;)

Temperatures in the 80s and humid, with passing showers.

8AM to Meridian
Made preparations for great gun target practice but did not have it, the surgeon objecting on account of the great heat.

June 26

The following text was added as a transcriber note and added to the comments in the tracker.
The clouds column from 7AM to 8AM and the clear sky column from 7AM to 10AM are obscured in the image by an insert. Entries for these times were transcribed with the same values as the adjacent values. The weather appeared to be quite stable at that time. So it is unlikely that these missing values would deviate from the adjacent values.

That looks reasonable. In fact, the weather, being overcast for the entire 12 hours, would make the Prob of Clear Sky zero. And, with no precip reported, the clouds would likely be unchanged.

The previous page shows the missing data.

You will find lots of those pages.

At the end of the month my additional Punishment lists sometimes cover three pages of inserts.

I didn't bother looking at the previous page because that was the one where they covered the weather side with the insert, but it still does show the missing cloud types and couple more of the missing cloud cover entries. 9 and 10 AM cloud cover are still missing in both images, but for a few days it has been all zeroes until later that afternoon.

This log book has had lots of inserts, but this was the first case where weather data was covered despite the insert being held over on the event side.

I'm just glad I'm not the person who has to create these images. They must be thinking to themselves, "Why am I doing this? Is anyone really going to ever look at these images?" At least we know that the results of our transcribing are being put to good use.

HI.
If you did not look back at the previous page you may have found the date increments will put your entries out if your not careful.
I have by default accepted the auto incremented date and had to go back and change it.

4th of July celebration at Callao, Peru:

Having transcribed a few years of Shenandoah logs, I only recall seeing one other mention of any sort of celebration.

July 3:

8AM to Meridian
Sent an officer to the various men-of-war in port to inform them of our intention to celebrate tomorrow the 4th of July in the usual manner and request their participation
https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorag ... 37-071.JPG

July 4:

4AM to 8AM
At sunrise dressed ship in honor of the day - our motions in dressing were followed by the two Chilian men-of war and the French gunboat, and later by several merchant-ships in the harbor.
8AM to Meridian
At noon fired a national salute of 21 guns. The Chilian cruiser "Esmeralda", and French corvette "Bourayne" fired a salute of 21 guns.
Meridian to 4PM
Parties of ladies and gentlemen on board dancing
