On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances (nautical miles and tenths), courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record State of the Sea.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea column.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae, volcanic, and seismic activity should be reported in the forum.
The names of US Navy and Coast Guard ships met should be noted. This gives the science team a chance to compare weather readings. You can include all ships mentioned in a single entry without a time or any additional data.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.

Received dispatch from Perryville, woman acutely ill with bladder trouble. Recalled liberty party. Made all preparations to get underway.
2224: Underway.
2242: Increased speed to all that can be made on one boiler. Second boiler being brought up to steaming pressure.

1810: Contacted Tender Cedar.
1811: #1 Boat lowered away.
1820: #1 Boat returned to ship from Cedar with Maxine Kechinoff, Perryville, Alaska, for transportation to U.S. Government Hospital at Unalaska.
1821: #1 Boat hoisted.
1825: Proceeding on course 241 - standard speed 130 R.P.M.

I've noticed that the gun crews are getting lots of drills, and the crew are often ashore taking rifle and pistol training. They have also been testing the ship, seeing how tight they can make turns, doing circles, reversing and then seeing how quickly they can come to a stop etc. It's as if they know that war is coming to them, too.

It sounds like they aren't doing too badly although I would rather have beans than meat.

Sailing from Nikolski to Kanatak via Unalaska

We are taking a sick infant from Nikolski to the hospital in Unalaska. On the way this was logged at 0000.
Underway on course 41 speed 140 R.P.M. proceeding to Kanatak to render medical assistance to government school teacher badly burned.
They anchored in Iliuliuk Bay at 0534, and took the infant, George Prokopioff, to the hospital.

then, at 6:10
Underway on various courses and speeds standing out into Unalaska Bay. 6:17 Set speed to 15.3 knots (140 R.P.M.) en-route to Kanatak to render medical assistance, government school teacher suffering from severe burns.

Kanatak

They anchored off Kanatak at 1318. At 1325 Boat #1 was lowered and away with the official and medical party.

Medical assistance was rendered onshore. At 1730 the boat returned and at 1742 Shoshone was underway and left the harbor. I was expecting them to take the teacher to a hospital, but apparently not.

King Cove
0245 Moored starboard side to dock at King Cove.
0255: Medical party and Deputy Marshall, Lt. Moykowski went ashore to render medical aid to injured parties.
0405: Commanding Officer held coroners inquest into the wounding of B. Compo, King Cove, Alaska.
0635: Nick Amilgalishoff, native, aboard for transportation to Government Hospital, Unalaska.
0720: Bebiera, Compo aboard for transportation to Government Hospital, Unalaska.
0810: Lieut Moykowski with a party of 9 men departed to search Filipino quarters for fire arms.
1010: Searching party returned. Jury at coroners inquest found found Nick Amilgalishoff guilty of assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to kill.
1038: Unmoored and stood out of King Cove at various courses and speeds.

1942: Barbiera Campo aboard for transportation to Government Hospital Unalaska died. Death due to gunshot wounds.
2250: Moored Alaska Commercial Co. dock, Unalaska.
2300: Nick Amilgalishoff, wounded native, transferred to Unalaska Hospital.
2315: Simplicio B. Campo, deceased Filipino, transferred to Unalaska Hospital.

The voyage for 1940 has been completed. Thus ends our work with this vessel. You can see a plot of the voyage here and, for more detail, you can download the KML file and view it with Google Earth. There were some mentions of people, which you can see here.

On this voyage we went to many many communities in our role as:
  1. A taxi;
  2. An ambulance;
  3. A postal van;
  4. A tow truck; and,
  5. A paddy wagon.
