On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances (knots and fathoms), courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
However, entries such as Ebb and Flood in the knots and fathoms columns can be omitted. In this case and other cases where no distance is specified, entries in the courses steered column indicate the ship's alignment rather displacement and can also omitted.
It is not necessary to record Leeway or State of the Sea.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta State of the Sea column.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae, volcanic, and seismic activity should be reported in the forum.
The names of US Navy and Coast Guard ships met should be noted. This gives the science team a chance to compare weather readings. You can include all ships mentioned in a single entry without a time or any additional data.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.

See Ashuelot — General for some general background and discussion.
See Ashuelot — Examples for a quick introduction to transcribing or a refresher.

See Transcribing Guide to learn how to transcribe the data.
Post in Ask Questions Here or this topic if you have questions.

As Ulysses Grant was on board this year, I'd like to reserve 1879 as well.

Just finished uploading Oct ... Jan to Oct all uploaded. From what I can see, there's no data for Nov and Dec, so guess that's it for 1879. Moving on to 1872 now.

Monday, May 5 1879
Hong Kong
At 7:10 Ex President U. S. Grant and suite came on board, received the Ex President Grant with a salute of 21 guns and hoisted the American Ensign at the fore. At 7:50 started ahead, standing up the Canton River, pilot conning the ship.
They take Ex President Grant to Canton, part of his world tour.

Forts around Tiger Island turned out guards and fired salutes of three guns.

July 3
Yokohama

The Richmond and we came in to Yokohama. Lots more salutes and flag waving. The USS Monongahela was in port. I looked up her log to see if I could get a position for where we anchored. With Gen U. S. Grant on the Richmond, our log keepers have taken the opportunity to be quite vague about their positions and course changes etc. Here's how the Monongahela saw the days events. I suspect that tomorrow, being the 4th of July, will see lots more salutes. The next day we report that nine or ten ships fired salutes.

The voyage for 1879 has been completed, with excellent work by SleepyOwl! We went to lots of places, and this voyage pushes our total OW Phase VI Federal Ships mileage over the 3,000,000 nautical mile mark. There were people mentioned here, and you can see a plot of the voyage here. For more detail, you can download the KML file and view it with Google Earth.
