September 7th 1899
'steaming under a jingle bell'

Jingle bell:
Steam ship: steaming 'under a jingle bell'.
To "hook 'er up", while in either direction - a "jingle" on a small bell. To go from "hooked up" astern to "hooked up" ahead - one bell to slow down, one to stop, one for ahead, and a jingle to "hook 'er up"...three bells in all, and a jingle.

Capt Bodfish recorded a change in wind direction on Sept 22nd 1899 as:
'wind hauled ahead'
So I checked on the direction and he's used the 128 point compass rose which is very nice :)
'course SE by E 1/4 E'

For more about the compass rose see Points of the Compass in the Library; Nautical, military, and whaling terminology
