Midnight - 4am
At 1215 having passed El Fraile, a battery on the Southern shore at this time in range with the rock, fired 3 shots which were answered by the Boston with two shots and by this vessel with 3 rounds from stbd after 6pdr RF gun.
No further shots were exchanged, steaming up the bay abreast the flagship.
0100 recd signal Steam 4 knots". Chief Eng'r F.B. Randall, while on duty in engine room, was stricken with an attack of heat apoplexy brought on by high temperature of the place and became prostrated and unconscious.
0152 Surgeon Gum reported him to be very low and at latter’s request signaled flagship "Chief Eng'r dangerously low, doctor requests consultation", but received only "Impossible".
At 0208, the surgeon reported Chief Engineer Randell dead from an attack of Heat apoplexy.
Officers and crew slept at quarters, battery cast loose and loaded.

4-8am
At daylight squadron approached Kavito, flagship signaled "prepare for guns at action"
0515 shore battery at Kavito and Spanish war vessels at entrance to that bay opened fire which was returned by our squadron steaming at slow speed under port helm thus rounding about and returning fire from Stbd battery, afterwards performing same evolution a second time, a brisk and spirited action ensuing.
At 7:30 flagship signaled "Withdraw from action" followed by "let the men go for breakfast."
Hauled off into Bay out of range and stopped in response to signal at 0830am.
At 9:00 signal "Comd'g Officer repair on board".

8AM to Mer.
Vessel stopped until 10:00 awaiting return of Comd'g Officer from flagship. Muster omitted owing to existing circumstances.
10:30 underway and proceeded to intercept BrStr "Esmaralda" bound in, ordered her to anchor till action was over, and to have or allow us communication with him.
Fleet meantime proceeded to again engage force in Kavito, shortly silencing shore battery while no Spanish ship offered resistance, the flagship having been ? in AM engagement and thus ?.

1245 ememy surrendered Kavito. Leaving Concord and Petrel to enter the bay squadron steamed towards Manilla.

Mer – 4. At 1:53 Olympia anchored off Manilla, signaled this vessel to communicate and directed a boat to be sent to her for Amer Consul Williams. Complied and took Consul to Br. Ship Buc?l?ngh on official business.
4 to 6PM At 400 communicated with Olympia, requestion services of Chaplin Frasier to bury Chief Eng’r Randell. Having Chaplain on board steamed down bay and at 4:15 stopped. Chaplain Frazier read the service for the dead, officers and crew being mustered in stbd waist, body reposing at the Stbd gangway covered with union flag. At 420 committed the remains of Chief Eng’r F.B. Randall to the deep and fired 3 volleys from a party of 16mm, bugler then sounded “Taps”. This action was in accordance with advice from Comd in Chief, it being problematic when the opportunity would offer to inter the body on shore. At 5:00 anchored abreast Olympia.
6-8PM At 6:15 recd signal “F” “be ready to get underway”. At 7:40 underway and in compliance with instructions took position off mouth of the Pasig river, town of Manilla, to prevent and vessels, war or otherwise from leaving port, coming to at 8,

Cast loose battery stationed two sentinels on poop and topgallant forecastle and kept vigilant watch on surroundings. No movements on shore or afloat observed during watch.

Party from flagship blew up a large gun in Spanish shore battery.

3rd May
Burial party from Olympia, Baltimore and Boston went ashore to offer assistance to the Spanish.

I can't imagine how hot it must have been in the engine room. Poor Chief Engineer Randall. RIP.

From my limited experience in a ships coal fires steam boiler room, very hot under the conditions they were in. I imagine all hatched, vents and doors would be shut to prevent water ingress from any possible damage sustained.

I guess that you couldn't have done a very good job defeating the Spanish when you were on the Concord, because they sent you back to try again on McCulloch.

Good one Michael.

The Flagship boys seemed to have had all the fun. They got to go ashore and blow up a big gun.

That's the second time you've been thanked by Congress and the American people for gallantry and signal success in the action against the Spanish fleet and batteries at the Battle of Manila Bay. You are probably the only person who was on two different ships at the same time.

Saturday 13th August 1898. Bombardment of Manilla.

0645 Stood towards Concord and Petral, where stopped and sent a boat with officers from Admirals staff to communicate with them.
Made preparations for the bombardment.
0740 steamed ahead towards American fleet.

0935 The Flagship Raleigh, Petrel and Callas being about 3500 yds off the fort at Malate the former opened fire, port battery, followed by the Petrel at 0940 and then The Raleigh and Callas.
The flagship now turned and stood very slowly to N'd and W'd, all of the above named vessels carried on unan t??? an intermittent fire, those of lighter draft also edging inshore.
No reply to our guns being made from the fort the flagship at 1030 signaled "Cease firing".
At 1045 smoke, as of a gun or explosion was seen from the Malate fort and the flagship at once sent one shell in that direction followed by the Raleigh and Callas no response being made to the Olympia again signalled “Cease firing” and soldiers of our forces were observed approaching the fort along the beach and entering the same. Callas continued firing until 1055 and stood close in shore. Flagship and ? Steamed slowly to N’d and W’d, remainder of fleet off mouth of Pasiq River.
At this time (1055) Olympia hoisted to the city the International signal D.M.H.B. “Surrender” followed at 1059 by signal to the fleet “take your positions” and immediately there after by signal “Close”.
At 1115 observed a heavy column of black smoke rising onshore in area of the fort just bombarded.
At 1120, flagship, still maneuvering very slowly along city front to N’d and W’d hauled down the International signal “Surrender” and at 1130 signalled to the Zafiro, which steaming up followed by a steam launch of the Belgian consul.
At 1145 the side wheel steamer Kevonchoi approached the fleet having a detachment of our troops on board and flying the American flag, at the same time the Belgian Consuls launch and a small boat from Zafiro communicated with “F”.
At 1157 the Belgian launch with Zafiro’s small boat in tow, latter flying American flag, flag of truce on Belgian boat, left flagship and stood in towards the city where a landing was effected.
Crew at quarters during watch, batteries cast loose and everything ready for action.

At 1PM Observed a white flag on the Hunetta fort. Fleet moving slowly N’d and W’d near the breakwater.
Soldiers advancing along the water front into the city under care of the Callas.
At 2:20PM the Belgian Consul’s launch with Zafiro’s boat in tow returned to the Olympia.
At 2:27PM F signalled “The enemy has surrendered”, which signal was greeted with three cheers from the crews of the ships of our fleet.

[More text in log]

At 5:45 PM the Spanish flag was hauled down from the staff upon the Lurretta fort and in it’s place was hoisted the “Stars and Stripes”. Whereupon on a signal from F the entire American fleet fired a National Salute.

[More text in log]

At 5:40 boats returned from shore having assisted in landing troops and later having also attempted, in conjunction with men from Callas, to extinguish a fire on the Spanish gun boat Cebic, which vessel, with Spanish flag flying, and steam up, had been set on fire just onside mouth of the Pasiq River and by the enemy. Failing in the attempt to gain control of the flames the Spanish flag was hauled down, an American ensign hoisted and the vessel abandoned to her fate.

August 28th.
Held muster, at which cablegram of Aug 18th, from President of the US to Admiral Dewey, congratulating and thanking him, his officers and crew for the capture of Manila was published.

As far as I know they want everything from pre-1900 logs, but see what Michael has to say.

That's what I understand. It's Manila and I suspect they may not have the same amount of data as they do for U. S. ports.
