2:10 sighted small sail craft on port beam making signal
of distress, Stopped and waited for her to come along side. She
proved to be an otter boat belonging to Japanese sealing
schooner Sifu Maru, of Hakodate, and contained three
men, A Burtz of Victoria, B.C., hunter, and two Japanese,
Y. Takaki and T Kikuchi, both of Hakodate. They had two
seal skins, taken Friday, and two shot guns with ammunition.
They left vessel Friday morning (17th inst.) and were lost in
fog. When picked up had enough food remaining for one
meal and about one gallon of fresh water. Took them onboard
served them a ration each. Hoisted their boat and at 2:30
ahead on course.
20 July
3:15 sighted schooner and hauled
NE to speak her; proved to be Schr Sifu Maru on
coming up with her. Sent the three men picked up in
the afternoon to their vessel with their belongings.
