(Logs listed in fine print are not currently being transcribed because the ship is in California, Washington, or British Columbia)

On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances (nautical miles and tenths), courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record State of the Sea.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea column.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae, volcanic, and seismic activity should be reported in the forum.
The names of US Navy and Coast Guard ships met should be noted. This gives the science team a chance to compare weather readings. You can include all ships mentioned in a single entry without a time or any additional data.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.

See McCulloch — General for some general background and discussion.
See McCulloch — Examples for a quick introduction to transcribing or a refresher.

See Transcribing Guide to learn how to transcribe the data.

This got off to an interesting start - just hours after starting the trip back north, a seaman got washed overboard and it took them half an hour to rescue him!

May done. It was just 8 days, all about the trip north.
They had trouble making progress at first because of low winds - in fact, they realized they would run out of coal before reaching Unalaska, so they decided to go for Sitka instead, and sent a telegraph to the Secretary of the Treasury in Washington (DC) to ask for permission to do that!
Reply came a few days later, it said they should use any port that is convenient.
From looking ahead in the logbook, I see they did indeed go to Sitka first, then Unalaska.

Interesting. I never thought too much about why some ships went directly to Unalaska and some went along the coast.

8-) 8-) 8-)

Considering that the message took several days to get back to them, I wonder what they would have done if he had said, "NO! Go to Unalaska!" :lol: :lol: :lol:

Probably said "Sorry boss - the receiver wasn't working, so by the time we got your message, we were already in Sitka" or something like that.
They actually did have trouble receiving the message, it took a few days.

The page for July 14th is missing entirely:
https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorag ... 8_0068.JPG -> Monday the 13th
https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorag ... 8_0069.JPG -> Tuesday the 15th

At least it's not a big loss, as they would have been in port at Unalaska the whole time. If there's one place in Alaska where we've got enough data already, it's that!

July done. Movement was slow at times due to fog - but I did get some ice mentions, the first I've had in a while!
