Northwind (1949) -- Discussion: Questions, Comments and Coordination

Post by Randi »

On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances, courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record Sea Conditions or Swells from.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea columns.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae and volcanic activity should be reported in the forum.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.
(If one transcriber does events and weather and they are in the same image, the date is only entered once.)

See Northwind -- General for some general background and discussion.
See Northwind -- Examples for a quick introduction to transcribing or a refresher.
See the Transcribing Guide to learn how to transcribe the data.
Post in Ask Questions Here or this topic if you have questions.

February complete. March requested on tracker.

Very routine month for the Northwind. Quick 2 mile trip to the repair dock for a couple weeks and 2 mile trip back. No hi-jinks or wacky situations to report. These sailors seemed to behave themselves this month!

Good work!

I think the crew's behavior is a reflection of the officer's behavior. You must be setting a good example ;)

(Michael and Stuart had endless problems with the crew on the DisConcord! That is a standing joke here in OW land :D)

March complete:

Underway to Naval Shipyard Bremerton and back within the month.

2 counts of underage drinking in Bremerton. Pretty easy punishment compared with what these guys would get today! 10 days restriction to the ship, not that bad.

April requested on tracker. Sorry for the slowness, my 2 jobs have been demanding this month.

Don't worry. Sometimes real life intrudes.

April is yours!

Interesting incident between 0800 and 1200.

I assume it was not the CGC McLane that was destroyed?

Why not make it a challenge and see how fast you can transcribe those 6 WR/day and one location, Stuart?
I've managed to do it in 45-60 seconds.

No, it wasn't the McLane!
She was decommissioned in 1969, and acquired by a Sea Scout group in Chicago. She was acquired by the USS Silversides and Maritime Museum in 1993.

Looking back at my last few days I saved 9 dockside pages in 12 min blindfolded with one hand behind my back and a beer in the other.

Well maybe not blindfolded and maybe both fingers on the keyboard.
