Haida (1935) — Discussion: Questions, Comments and Coordination

Post by Randi »

On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances (nautical miles and tenths), courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record State of the Sea.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea column.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae, volcanic, and seismic activity should be reported in the forum.
The names of US Navy and Coast Guard ships met should be noted. This gives the science team a chance to compare weather readings. You can include all ships mentioned in a single entry without a time or any additional data.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.

For each month, typed logs follow the handwritten logs.
Please transcribe the handwritten logs. You can check the typed log when you can't read something.

See Haida — General for some general background and discussion.
See Haida — Examples for a quick introduction to transcribing or a refresher.

See Transcribing Guide to learn how to transcribe the data.
Post in Ask Questions Here or this topic if you have questions.

I'm not sure what the bridge book is, but "erasing entries in the bridge book" has to be pretty serious.

After spending pretty much the entire month of February in port at Cordova, she visited a few places in the Aleutians in March:

https://catalog.archives.gov/OpaAPI/med ... 3-0011.JPG
0310 Vance B. Murray, Medical Director Bureau of Indian Affairs, Juneau, Alaska, reported on board for transportation to Sand Point, Alaska to render medical aid in an epidemic of infantile paralysis. This transportation furnished at the request of John W. Troy, Governor of Alaska

0655 Miss Agnes Reese, Traveling Nurse Bureau of Indian Affairs, Cordova, Alaska, reported on board for transportation to Sand Point, Alaska; circumstances same as noted in case of Vance B. Murray.
https://catalog.archives.gov/OpaAPI/med ... 3-0014.JPG
1005 Acting Assistant Surgeon J.M. Wolfe Dr. Murray of Bureau of Indian Affairs; Bureau of Indian Affairs nurse from Cordova, Alaska and Pharmicists Mate Hunter left the vessel as an investigating party to investigate reported cases of infantile paralysis in the village of Sand Point.

1720 Medical party returned from investigation of the village having obtained the following information:
Three cases of infantile paralysis, all natives, one male 21 years of age, one female 17 years of age and one infance about two months of age.
Disease is not Epidemic. Ten houses were inspected and inmates given a medical examination.
Seventeen persons received diptheria toxoid and vaccination against small-pox. Four others received vaccination only.

I've seen this a couple of other times already. Why are they changing course? Is this some obscure vocabulary for ice?

Set can mean the direction from which a wind is blowing or towards which a tide or current is moving
https://www.thefreedictionary.com/set

https://www.paddlinglight.com/articles/ ... -headings/ may help.

That's why my calculating task is tricky. Imagine that the log says they're going North at 10 but four hours later they report a position that's NNE of their starting position. It's because the wind or current is pushing them towards the east. Similarly, if the wind or current are from the north, they might end up only 36 miles north of their position, not 40.

A word of warning:

The gyro compass started having problems around mid-august (https://catalog.archives.gov/OpaAPI/med ... 8-0017.JPG), since then most bearings have been given as psc

Looking forward they appear to still do this in December, so it appears likely it won't get fixed until they go back to Seattle sometime in 1936

Been a rough few days in Seward

https://catalog.archives.gov/OpaAPI/med ... 0-0006.JPG
2115 The board of investigation of which Lieutenant L.C. Gibson U.S.C.G. is president convened to investigate into the alleged grounding of the Morris and the sinking of a powered dory
2240 The board recessed until tomorrow due to torrential rains causing Lowell Creek to rise and flood, endangering lives and property in Seward and making the power plant inoperative

https://catalog.archives.gov/OpaAPI/med ... 0-0007.JPG
0800 The board of investigation met and continued investigation.
The Commanding Officer consulted with Colonel Ohlson, U.S.A. and with influential citizens of Seward concerning the possibility of the Haida furnishing electric power to Seward
0900-1600 Unable to obtain rotary converter in Seward or Anchorage, thereby precluding the possibility of the Haida furnishing electric power to Seward.
The Engineer Officer proceeded to the local power-plant to consult the Superintendent of the power plant.

https://catalog.archives.gov/OpaAPI/med ... 0-0008.JPG

1300 Lieutenant  j.g. J.D. Harrington and working party consisting of engineer force departed to power plant at Seward; The Glacier stream having bee diverge from the power house the engineers force began to test electrical insulation throughout the power plant
1515 Took over radio guard of Army Signal Corps Seward Station. This station not having electrical power and unable to use cable line to Ketchikan or land line to Anchorage.
1715 Lieutenant j.g. J.D. Harrington and working party returned to ship having restored electrical power to Seward at 1700.

https://catalog.archives.gov/OpaAPI/med ... 0-0009.JPG
2030 Shore patrol consisting of Robert E. Ayers (100-362) C.G. Std., James H. Kinchen (105-805) G.M. 3c and Donald G. Van Brocklin (217-151) Y. 2c departed on duty assigned.

https://catalog.archives.gov/OpaAPI/med ... 0-0010.JPG
0510 James H. Kinchen (105-805) G.M. 3c returned from shore patrol duty, having been severely beaten by five or six civilians, one of whome was named Ray Mathey. The doctor was called and treatment given Kinchen.

1200 The United States Attorney and Commissioner were informed of the facts concerning the assult of James H. Kinchen (105-805) G.M. 3c by Ray Mathey and other civilians. The United States Attorney questioned James H. Kinchen (105-805) G.M. 3c and Leo N. Soward (110-505) SEA 1c and the civilians. He stated that he would prefer charges against the accused civilians and that he would subpoena the following persons as witnesses at the next term of Federal Court in Seward about December 1935:
A.A. Surgeon U.B.P.H.S. James D. Wolfe, Ensign C.M. Speight, James H. Kinchen (105-805) G.M. 3c
