Haida (1930) — Discussion: Questions, Comments and Coordination

On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances (nautical miles and tenths), courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record State of the Sea.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea column.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae, volcanic, and seismic activity should be reported in the forum.
The names of US Navy and Coast Guard ships met should be noted. This gives the science team a chance to compare weather readings. You can include all ships mentioned in a single entry without a time or any additional data.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.

Several days into April now and every day many of the dry and wet bulb temperatures are reversed. It's always for a shift at a time. You can see the difference in handwriting at shift changes and corresponding reversed entries. You would think that eventually someone on a later shift would notice the reversed entries earlier in the log and say something. But so far it's continuing.

ATTENTION NEW TRANSCRIBERS:
In cases like this, where the data is clearly in the wrong column, it can be transcribed into the correct column.
The occasional case of dry bulb temperature lower than wet bulb temperature should be transcribed as is.

The Haida was put into action immediately upon approach from Seattle.

April 19
5:40PM
Received word from Lazy Bay radio that the fishing schooner "OMANEY" is aground near Lazy Bay Kodiak Island and master has requested that the men
be removed from vessel and transported to Kodiak, Alaska.

April 21
9:15AM
anchored in Lazy Bay, Kodiak Isl.
9:15 Lowered surfboat and sent party ashore to obtain details of wreck of schooner. OMANEY.
10:21 Boat returned.
10:49 Sent boat ashore with No 2 Surfboat in tow to pick up crew and gear of the OMANEY.
11:55 Boats returned. Picked up boats.
Delayed sailing for the wreck on account of repairing Condenser.
The following named men, forming the crew of the grounded schooner were taken on board as destitute seamen for transportation to Kodiak:
Oswald Olson, Captain, Pete Johnson, Engineer, John Nordvick, Arne Overland, Svene Ringdahl, Matt Jeffs, Art Rowik, Chris Skodje, Carl Borstad, and John Johnson.

April 22
4:10AM got underway; stood out of Lazy Bay, Kodiak Island, for Sitkinak Strait on various courses
7:35AM anchored one mi W of Seal Rocks, north of Sitkinak Island
Started preperations for pulling motor ship "Omaney" of Ketchikan, off of rocks.
Received request from U.S. Marshall Sullivan to investigate criminal crew at Sanak Island.
9:30 weighed anchor and shifted to a position nearer beached vessel.
10:10 Ran running line to "Omaney" with motor launch.
Unable to move "Omaney" with running line. "Omaney" was aground behind reef and moved slightly at high tide; surrounded by breakers at half tide.
10:50 Motor launch returned
Meridian to 4PM
Crew preparing gear for use in floating OMANEY when tide changes.
4PM to 6PM
Anchored as before standing by to tow fishing vessel OMANEY off beach at max high water.
6PM to 8PM
Made preparations for running wire cable from "Omaney" to Haida
6:10 Executive Officer and working party left for "Omaney" with 200 fathoms, 5/8" wire cable
7:45 slack water.
8PM to Mid
Working party in charge of Executive Officer engaged in running wire cable from "Omaney" to Haida. Heavy strain was taken on wire cable by capstan.
9:15 Engines were turned over 1/3 ahead increasing rpm slowly to 60 rpm.
9:20 Engines stopped - "Omaney" afloat. Crew of "Omaney" and personal belongings transferred to "Omaney."
Oswald Olson, Master, reported "Omaney" not damaged and able to proceed to Lazy Bay. No further assistance required. Kept "Omaney's" fishing gear to
be landed at Kodiak at Master's request.
10:15 "Omaney" departed for Lazy Bay, Kodiak Is. under own power.

The location at 7:35AM is west of Seal Rocks. I cannot find any Seal Rocks near the given coordinates. My guess is that it is near Cape Sitkinak.
Also at 7:35AM the Haida received a request to investigate the criminal crew at Sanak Island. Nothing further on that yet...

Based on the log for May 3, it appears the officers must have had some night out on the town the night before. Wind direction and force were combined and entered in the course column, pressure in the wind direction column, dry bulb temperature in the wind force column, and dry bulb temperature in the pressure column, with one entry where dry and wet bulb temperatures appear to be reversed. I'm fairly sure they are reversed because every log page in April had one, two, or more shifts with the temperatures reversed. Proofreading was difficult after transcribing to the correct columns.
