Haida (1927) — Discussion: Questions, Comments and Coordination

Post by Randi »

On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances (nautical miles and tenths), courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record State of the Sea.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea column.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae, volcanic, and seismic activity should be reported in the forum.
The names of US Navy and Coast Guard ships met should be noted. This gives the science team a chance to compare weather readings. You can include all ships mentioned in a single entry without a time or any additional data.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.

See Haida — General for some general background and discussion.
See Haida — Examples for a quick introduction to transcribing or a refresher.

See Transcribing Guide to learn how to transcribe the data.
Post in Ask Questions Here or this topic if you have questions.

May done and uploaded. First half in port, then they went and did stuff - there were a few ice mentions too, the first I've came across in ages!

I can't work out the location at 10:40 - it looks like Kal~iak Point, but there's nothing matching in the Reference or on maps.
Maybe it's actually Jack Point? I saw there's a place called that on GeoNames, and it would be in the right location given their course and destination.

Thanks Randi - that fits perfectly. I mentioned it in the Alaska Place Names Discussion.

July done and uploaded. Most of the time was spent at sea - there was one ice mention, bunch of "floating court" business (Not the same thing as floating churches!) and the towing of a civilian ship to safety.

August done, couple of interesting things:

- Transported two "insane prisoners" and a juvenile delinquent to Valdez, with a US marshal as escort
- At one point, they left Dutch Harbor without one crew member who was AWOL. They probably picked him up again as they returned just a few days later, but I didn't notice.
- On the last day, they had to stop due to engine trouble, but it only took two hours to repair, so hopefully nothing serious.

Now onwards to the last month!

And it's done! Just uploaded it.
She was in port most of the month, but at one point she towed the SS Victoria, which apparently suffered an engine breakdown, to Akutan.
Then at the end of the month, she went down south to the Rainy City, like always.

Onwards to 1928!
