Haida (1923) — Discussion: Questions, Comments and Coordination

Post by Randi »

On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances (nautical miles and tenths), courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record State of the Sea.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea column.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae, volcanic, and seismic activity should be reported in the forum.
The names of US Navy and Coast Guard ships met should be noted. This gives the science team a chance to compare weather readings. You can include all ships mentioned in a single entry without a time or any additional data.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.

See Haida — General for some general background and discussion.
See Haida — Examples for a quick introduction to transcribing or a refresher.

See Transcribing Guide to learn how to transcribe the data.
Post in Ask Questions Here or this topic if you have questions.

Port Townsend
08:00 Half-masted colors in honor of Commander Francis Tuttle, retired, whose funeral is to be held today.
11:00 Pall bearers, body bearers, and escort left vessel to attend funeral of Comdr Francis Tuttle, U.S. Coast Guard retired, being buried with full military honors.
No word of the men returning to the Haida which left at 14:10 for Unalaska. ;)

Francis Tuttle was a long-time captain on the Bear. He was famous for organizing the Overland Expedition to bring supplies to the whalers trapped in ice north of Barrow.

Kings Cove
6 PM to Mid. Commanding Officer went ashore and conferred with Mr. A. N. Herrold, manager of the Pacific American Fisheries Co; he stated that conditions of inhabitants in general were very good. There are no accomodations (?) for Bureau of Fisheries Agent Crompton, wife and child on shore so they are to remain on board for passage to Ikatan.
Medical Officer went ashore to investigate health conditions; he reports health conditions good at present; late in March there were 15 cases of influenza with 4 deaths; no medical treatments given.
One of the sad realities of life in the north, especially in the first half of the twentieth century. I knew a nurse in Whitehorse. She had been long retired, and was living in an extended care home. Her stories about travelling around the Yukon trying to get vaccines to remote villages in the late 40's and early 1950's in the winter with unreliable vehicles, bad roads, and severe winter weather were fascinating. She had to learn how to fix cars, change tires and dig herself out of snow drifts all while trying to keep vaccines and other medicines from freezing.

Wednesday, June 6.
Unalaska

Yet another one on the rocks. You can read out the short live of U.S.S. Cardinal below. It seems that the men from the U.S.S. Cardinal were rescued by the Coast and Geodetic Survey Vessel Discoverer and the U.S.S. Cayuma. The article about the Discoverer has a very good description of the rescue.
11:00 AM Received instructions from Bering Sea Patrol Force Commander to get underway as soon as possible to proceed to the assistance of the U.S.S. Cardinal, ashore on Chirikof Island. Closed port boiler, which was being cleaned, expediting the work to the utmost.
3:00 PM Underway, in accordance with verbal instructions of Commander Bering Sea Patrol Force. Hoisted launch and surf boat. Stood out of harbor, forced draft. (14.6 knots)
Friday, June 8

Anchored off Chirikof Island
7:45 AM. Commanding Officer left the vessel to confer with the Admiral on the U.S.S. Cayuma.
7:20 Coast & Geodetic Survey Vessel "Discoverer" stood to the Eastward.
10:15 Commanding Officer returned to vessel.
10:45 Underway. Stood various courses, 115 r.p.m., around Northern end of Chirikof Id., and down toward wreck of U.S.S. Cardinal, in order to examine and report her condition to Commander Base Fleet, in accordance with his request.
11:50 Anchored off East side Chirikof Id.
12:50 Lowered launch and the Commanding Officer visited wreck of CARDINAL for the purpose of examining her condition.
3:45 PM Launch returned to ship. Made preparations for getting underway.
4:05 Underway
5:50 Anchored west side Chirikof Id, close to U.S.S. Cuyama.
6:00 Commanding Officer conferred with Commander Base Fleet.
7:00 Commanding Officer returned. Rear Admiral V. Chase, U.S.N., Captain A. G Howe, U.S.N. and Lieut. J. E. Reinburg, U.S.N., commander Base Fleet and aides respectively, came on board for passage to Unalaska.

On June 14, Russa Giovanni came on board for transportation to Bristol Bay. (He was the man who was shot earlier and treated by the M. O.s of Haida and Bear, and then taken to the Jesse Lee Home in Unalaska.)
