Atalanta (1943) — Discussion: Questions, Comments and Coordination

Post by Randi »

On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances (nautical miles and tenths), courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record State of the Sea.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea column.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae, volcanic, and seismic activity should be reported in the forum.
The names of US Navy and Coast Guard ships met should be noted. This gives the science team a chance to compare weather readings. You can include all ships mentioned in a single entry without a time or any additional data.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.

See Atalanta — General for some general background and discussion.
See Atalanta — Examples for a quick introduction to transcribing or a refresher.

See Transcribing Guide to learn how to transcribe the data.

On Jan 15th, they received 10 pounds of cake and three gallons of ice cream:

Sounds like a lot at first, but I'm not so sure given that they had over 60 people on board.
Also, who wants to eat ice cream in negative Fahrenheit temperatures?

Not me!

I'll have some cake though ;)
Oh, dear. I wish you hadn't started me thinking about that...

Brings back a memory from when I lived in Wyoming and drove 50 miles over the mountains to Baskin-Robbins for ice cream in the middle of winter when icicles went all the way from the roof of buildings down to the ground.

Also, I could be very warm inside the ship. In the old days in the Yukon, houses in the winter were often VERY warm, unpleasantly so. Newer homes were better insulated so you didn't need to have the heat so high in one part of the house so that the other parts weren't freezing.

January done and uploaded. This ship is a real doozy - 12 WR per day when in port, and she's on the go most of the time.
Towards the end of the month, I noticed she seemed to be going in circles around Kodiak all the time - I think it was anti-submarine patrol, but I'm not sure.

Could well be. Several mentions of submarines in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aleutian_Islands_campaign
Japan thereafter abandoned all attempts to resupply the Aleutian garrisons by surface vessels, and only submarines would be used.
...
Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto provided the Japanese Northern Area Fleet, commanded by Vice-Admiral Boshiro Hosogaya, with a force of two non-fleet aircraft carriers, five cruisers, twelve destroyers, six submarines,

America subs too:

February complete, more of the same as last month (except for the cake and ice cream).

There is barely any location data in March - the logbook mentions e.g. "Moored at 1023" without saying where, and each weather page only has a Noon location in whole degrees.
I believe this is due to War Diary orders, as Kevin recently explained.

In some cases, one can work out where they likely were - for example, there was one day where they set sail in the morning, and the Noon location was 54 N, 167 W, suggesting Dutch Harbor.
But others could be tricky - good luck, Michael!

March done and uploaded. As mentioned above, they recorded almost no location data due to war orders.
I peeked ahead, and this lasts until at least July - probably longer, as the orders were in effect until spring 1944.
Is there a plan to get the war diaries transcribed as well, like the WW2 spinoff is doing?

I'll ask Kevin, but I doubt it.
In OW: WW2 he said "Only one ship, the USS Farragut actually kept a kind of War Diary with the navigation data separated."

Kevin wrote:We will have to image the ATALANTA War Diary. There are some USCG ships included in the microfilm War Diaries online, but this digital collection is not comprehensive.
Under the present circumstances, I fear that will take awhile.
