The Whaler California 1895
Position Sept 26th The Arctic Ocean at Lat 70 30N Long 172 31W
They are surrounded by ice. On the day before, 25th Sept 1895 the report states:
'On 25th Sept: some very heavy cakes 12000 to 15000 tons some of them scattered all over the Arctic ocean there is no pack'
September 26th 1895
[...] came to the E ice ran off to the NW then hauled to wind heading SW took in M.T. Staysail furled upper foretopsail sailmaker off duty sick everybody got the blues I begin to get ugly but will try to do the best we can anyway no whale no dollar that what we are here for plenty of ice to the SW. W. NE but no Whales pumps and lights cared for W F Joseph Bk California

Other ice comments. I've included these because the log keeper made a point to note the mass of ice around that year.
Sept 1st 1895
[The Ice] makes 50 miles S. of the Shoals;something they don't see very often;
Sept 3rd 1895 Herald Island SW by S 25 miles
Ice to the E to the N to W; going to the NW like the dead; we are in a bite;
Sept 12th 1895
[ice] to the W; quite fresh to the N, E, W; a[l]most surrounded; all over the ocean this year;
Sept 17th 1895
[ice] to the W - N + E
Sept 18th 1895
[ice] scattering all over the Arctic Ocean this year;
