Storis (1953) -- Discussion: Questions, Comments and Coordination

Post by Randi »

On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances, courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record Sea Conditions or Swells from.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea columns.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae and volcanic activity should also be reported.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.
(If one transcriber does events and weather and they are in the same image, the date is only entered once.)

Ice hunting transcriptions were done for February through 29 March and 2 June through 30 November, so only the date and the weather need to be done now.
No transcriptions were done for January, 30 March through 1 June, and December, so a full transcription is needed.

ggordon wrote:Mon May 11, 2020 7:10 pm January is complete; quite an eventful month.

Toward the end of the month scattered across several days, a crew member became drunk and disorderly while on duty and ended up being escorted to the hospital where he stayed overnight. Mast was held, which resulted in a Court Martial which awarded two months confinement to ship and reduction in pay for four months.

It looks like February and March will just be date and weather. So it should go fast, but I'll miss the events; wondering what next...

I can't resist. I'll probably read through the events even though I won't be transcribing them.

It didn't look like I missed much by bypassing events for the month. There was just a lot of navigation, people coming and going, and a few disciplinary issues.

March appears to be just date and weather too.
ggordon wrote:Sun May 31, 2020 6:41 pm March is complete.

I resumed transcribing everything on March 30, with the ship moored in Seattle. Fortunately someone before me already transcribed the navigation through the Inside Passage from Juneau to Seattle. ;D

Too bad the log doesn't provide more details concerning this entry on December 6 while moored to the dock at Juneau. Article 86 is absent without leave.
0320 NELSON, CALVIN A. (296-484) HM3 fell off the dock, into the water. He was brought on board, treated for shock and exposure and turned in to his bunk.
NELSON, CALVIN A. (296-484) HM3 placed on report by Lt. VINCENT A. BOGUCKI 3749 USCG for violation of article 86, Uniform Code of Military Justice.
