Storis (1948) -- Discussion: Questions, Comments and Coordination

Post by Randi »

On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances, courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record Sea Conditions or Swells from.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea columns.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae and volcanic activity should also be reported.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.
(If one transcriber does events and weather and they are in the same image, the date is only entered once.)

Ice hunting transcriptions were done for December, so only the date and the weather need to be done now.
No transcriptions were done for January through November, so a full transcription is needed.

CG Base Berkley, VA
2200 In accordance with Commanding Officer's instructions, YOUNG, Arnold E. (275-340) TN, placed in hand irons in his bunk, for the safety and security of the ship and crew, there being no brig on board this vessel. Assigned a watch to check half-hourly on his welfare.
I thought it interesting that there was no brig on the ship. He was brought before the mast at 1300 for leaving the ship while restricted and awarded a board of investigation. Then, nine hours later, he's put in his bunk for the safety and security of ship and crew. No mention as to why the CO thought he was a risk.

0910 - Board of Investigation with Lt John R. McLeod as president, convened to determine the advisability of retaining Young, Arnold E (275-340) TA in the U.S. Coast Guard.
I haven't noticed anything logged to give a reason.

These photos are from my trip through the Panama Canal in November. We were going from Pacific to Caribbean, like Northland 1939. Storis was going in the opposite direction. The Panamax ships have two feet of clearance on each side of the canal. It cost our cruise ship $382,000 US to transit the canal. Maikel will be pleased to know we had a Dutch captain.
0844 Entered the Gatun Locks and departed at 0926.

1315 Entered the Pedro Miguel Lock and departed Miraflores Lock at 1432.

This is the first time I've seen this:
1300 Held quarters for muster. 1305 Inspected crew for venereal disease; No evidence of venereal disease found.
And our old friend appears in the logs once again:
1810 Young, Arnold E. (275-304) TA placed on report by Lieutenant (j.g.) Archibald B. How, U.S.C.G. for insubordination.
