Monocacy II (1931) -- Discussion: Questions, Comments and Coordination

Post by Randi »

On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances, courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
Pressure data is particularly important.
It is not necessary to record Sea Conditions or Swells from.
In the unlikely event that ice is mentioned in the weather grid, it should be transcribed using the magenta Sea columns.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae and volcanic activity should also be reported.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.
(If one transcriber does events and weather and they are in the same image, the date is only entered once.)

One guy got Courts Martialed, found guilty, reduced in rank, and kicked out of the Navy on a Bad Conduct Discharge for not paying his just debts. That's a pretty big deal actually. The other guy checked in from leave (vacation) 2 days late and got in some minor trouble.

briang wrote:Thu Apr 30, 2020 12:48 pm April 1931 complete. Quiet month: 1 guy went AWOL (absent without leave), came back, got arrested, court martialed, made a prisoner, escaped and went AWOL again, came back again, arrested, tried, and made prisoner. 1 small fire discovered, put out with 1 person burned. Ship's Commanding Officer temporarily assigned to guard duty.
briang wrote:Thu Apr 30, 2020 5:08 pm Turns out in May he receives as punishment loss of $51, 30 days bread and water confinement, and then Bad Conduct Discharge.

Another guy in early May leaves the ship for 4 hours and is in similar trouble now... Must be a leadership issue.

Clearly not by some people ::)

I tried to find out what the captain was doing, but no luck :P

The entry is from image 261, April 25, 1931:

1604 Lieutenant Commander Bruce P. Flood, U.S. Navy, left the ship for the M.V. I'TU as armed guard officer in that vessel in her voyage to Chungking, China and return in accordance with Commander Yangtze Patrol despatch 125 1030 April 1931.
briang wrote:Mon May 04, 2020 7:43 pm May 1931 complete. Damage occurred on 5/12 when another ship ran into USS Monocacy. Another close call around 5/26. Change of CO. Otherwise a quiet, stationary month. A couple of potential typos/outliers in the pressure and temp data but I recorded what I saw...
briang wrote:Tue May 12, 2020 12:22 pm Quiet month in the repair yards after the collision in May.
briang wrote:Tue May 19, 2020 3:11 pm July complete. Another quiet month. Moved to the drydock then back to the pontoon. 1 injury working on the anchor. 1 suspected case of malaria...

Michael wrote:Fri Jun 05, 2020 7:19 pm Many thanks to the great work by Derby1884 who did the 1930 portion, and BrianG who did 1931, the voyage for Monocacy II for 1930/31 has been calculated, and you can see it here.

You can get more detail if you download the KML file and view it with Google Earth.

With no latitudes, longitudes, courses or distances, we had to rely on the list of places passed as Monocacy sailed the Yangtze River. If you wondered how we found the location of places like the Kiousin Dock And Engineering Works, or Three Tree Light Beacon, we use historic maps like the ones here for the dock and here for the beacon. Just to make things a little harder, the Yangtze River frequently changes course. ;D
