On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances (knots and tenths), courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record State of the Sea.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea column.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae, volcanic, and seismic activity should be reported in the forum.
The names of US Navy and Coast Guard ships met should be noted. This gives the science team a chance to compare weather readings. You can include all ships mentioned in a single entry without a time or any additional data.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.

See Manning -- General for some general background and discussion.
See Manning -- Examples for a quick introduction to transcribing or a refresher.

See the Transcribing Guide to learn how to transcribe the data.
Post in Ask Questions Here or this topic if you have questions.

Leading up to this year the logs look easy to read.
I accept this challenge. :D

I left what I thought were the easier logs to read for Randi to give to the 'Newbies".
I looked at a couple of pages for each year and thought this looked the worst.

"you never know when Lieutenant Scrawl will pop up outta nowhere"
I will let you know where he is so you can avoid him for a while. :D

Early days in wireless communication...

13 July, 1909
Off the north end of Saint Paul Island.

Note: Bear leaves Saint Paul for Unalaska at 4:00 AM.
3:30 p.m. Kept in wireless communication with U.S.R.C. Bear, on her way to Unalaska, every hour to test wireless set.
6:45 p.m. Kept in communication with U.S.R.C. Bear up to 120 miles. Heard Bear up to 10:00 p.m., 135 miles. Bear did not get our signals after 7:30 p.m.
I imagine someone holding up the aerial and moving it around trying to get a signal, just like you see people doing today with their phones.

They did seem to have a lot of trouble with the radio on that voyage.

With the old antenna usually being a wire slung between masts I would guess it would tend to be a bit directional.

See http://www.navy-radio.com/ant-ship.htm for more info.

The voyage for 1909 has been done, many thanks to Stuart. It comprised of Seattle to Unalaska and then back and forth, over and over again, to and from Saint George and Saint Paul Islands and then back to Port Townsend several months later.

You can see the voyage here and, for more detail, download the KML file. It can be viewed in Google Earth.
