On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances, courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record Sea Conditions or Swells from.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea columns.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae and volcanic activity should also be reported.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.
(If one transcriber does events and weather and they are in the same image, the date is only entered once.)

Hanibal94 wrote:Wed Apr 15, 2020 7:30 pm Some pages include mentions of hourly drift observations via ship's head and stick (I assume the latter is part of the ship?), such as at the end of the Noon - 4 PM watch here:

Should these be transcribed?

Michael wrote:Wed Apr 15, 2020 10:39 pm Nope. ;) The ship's head is the direction she's pointing. You can see she's anchored, and they're measuring the speed and direction of the current.

Michael wrote:Mon Apr 20, 2020 11:23 pm Very cool. You can use Matteo's OW Anchorage Bearings to calculate the magnetic declination for a given position and time. Enter the Lat/Long as decimals or as Degrees Minutes and optional Seconds, and enter the date and optional month and click Find. There are other resources on the internet to do the same thing, but they all use the same basic program.

I remember reading about a geologist flying over Labrador many years ago. He was in a bush plane, and at one point the pilot remarked that he had to stop using the compass at a certain point because it went haywire over this area, so the pilot had to follow a river or whatever.

The geologist asked him if that was always the case. "Oh yes," the pilot said, "We all know about this."

Later the geologist went to that same area and staked out one of the world's largest iron mines. It turns out they were flying over a huge deposit of magnetite.

When I first saw this, I thought about rushing up to the area, but the depth of the Bering Sea there is about 18 fathoms, so I didn't bother. I wasn't sure how to position my claim stakes. ;D

Hanibal94 wrote:Sat May 02, 2020 4:56 pm On September 13th, the Northland received an urgent call (Radio, I presume) from Gambell, which she had left the previous day, about a native woman in labor.
So the Northland's medical officer stepped in and gave advice via radio!
