I don't see that the Monongahela recorded transferring 4000 lbs (or any, for that matter) bread to the Shenandoah!

They do record "80 Bags Buiscuit"--so if the Bags are 50 lbs. each that makes a nice round 4000 lbs. I don't suppose there's a reference guide to US Navy ship provisioning from the period...is there?

I wondered about that too.
I am guessing that was the 80 bags biscuits :?:

Ratings and the Evolution of Jobs in the Navy (Search for Cooks)
and
General Mess Manual and Cook Book, U. S. Navy 1902
are interesting, but not terribly helpful for this case of bread vs. biscuits.

"Shoes in lucky bag" is pretty great. That's a real "it made sense in my head until I said it" excuse.

According to the 1940 edition of the Blue Jackets' Manual (a handbook for U.S. Navy enlisted personnel), "The lucky bag is a place where the police petty officers stow for safe-keeping effects that are found adrift about the ship. All clothes, etc., found about the decks are placed in the lucky bag. When clothes are piped down, the police petty officer attends and takes care of all clothes not called for and places these in the lucky bag. All effects in this bag belong to the person who lost them. At frequent intervals the lucky bag is opened and the effects distributed to the owners. Where persons have been guilty of carelessness in leaving their effects adrift, they are placed on the report." According to the log of the USS Yosemite, on June 24, 1898 several sailors were given 72 hours extra duty for having an article in the lucky bag. - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucky_Bag

The Lucky Bag is a practice still followed on some school ships. We had a 'gear adrift' locker for such things - one could retrieve items at any time, but on field day (cleaning day) anything left there would be auctioned for a song (or other performance) with preference for the actual owner. Socks not so much but foulies commanded a high price, especially on northbound voyages. [krwood]

I meant more like the shoes being in the bag is not a good excuse to be shoe-less.

USS Lakawanna

August 18th
At 6.10 the Port chain parted, losing the Port anchor and 13 fms of chain

Searched until the 23th when the ship went surveying.
Returned from surveying on the 26th and resumed search on the 27th.
On the 28th we were busy with other things.

August 29th
A reward of One Hundred ($100) Dollars was offered for the recovery of the anchor, and Twenty five ($25) Dollars if seen and not recovered.

On the 30th we left minus our port anchor.
