On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances, courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record Sea Conditions or Swells from.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea columns.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae and volcanic activity should be reported in the forum.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.
(If one transcriber does events and weather and they are in the same image, the date is only entered once.)


Ice hunting transcriptions were done for April 6 to June 5, so only the date and the weather need to be done for those months now.
No transcriptions were done for January 1 to April 5 and June 6 to June 30, so a full transcription is needed for those months.
July through December are a different format and are being done separately.

July 27th, off Point Barrow.

0902:
Underway from port side of USCGC Northwind. 0921 Anchored, brgs North Beacon 80, Beaco 117 and Hangar 169.
0936 USS Requisite moored alongside to starboard. 0957 USCGC Storis in coming alongside to port collided with
starboard anchor and our port side in the vicinity of frame 88 causing a large dent 2 inches deep and six feet long.
No personnel casualties. The ship's hull plating was broken.

0939 Underway on various courses and speeds maneuvering to moor along the port side of the USS Burton Isalnd. 0951 Ahead 155 RPM with left full rudder. 0951.5 Back 155 RPM. 0952 Collided with USS Burton Island. Starboard anchor of the USCGC Storis tearing a hole (approximately 6 feel by 2 inches near fram 88) in the port healing tank of the USS Burton Island. Executive officer, Lt Vincent A. Bogucki (3749) had the conn, Commanding Office, CFR Harold L. Wood (1523) on the bridge, OOC Ens Rex R. Morgan (5408) at mooring station on the forecastle. 0953 Moored starboard side to USS Burton Isalnd to receive diesel fuel.

2005. While breaking large floe of ice, USS Requisite sheared out of towing chock and came up port quarter,
damaging the towing bow, and carrying away two flight deck stanchions and ripping the metal shield from starboard quarter
fender. All engines stopped. 2022 cast off USS Requisite. All engines ahead.
Here's a snippet about USS Requisite...
Recommissioned 15 February 1950, Requisite was assigned to hydrographic survey duties. She reported to the Atlantic Fleet for duty on 1 March and for the next 3 years she spent the winter survey season operating in the Caribbean and the warmer months off Labrador and Greenland. Reclassified AGS-18 on 18 August 1951, she discontinued her North Atlantic-Caribbean schedule in the fall of 1954. On 6 October she got underway from Norfolk; and, from 1 November 1954 to 2 February 1955, she conducted surveys from Iskenderun [sic; Iskenderum], Turkey.

The following year, Requisite shifted to the northern Pacific. She arrived at her new homeport, Seattle, in late June and before the end of the month had commenced Arctic operations. By mid-September she had surveyed routes from Herschel Island to Sheperd Bay, taking continuous soundings and compiling bathythermograph information and gathering core samplings every 20 miles. She continued her operations from Seattle until July 1958. Then homeported at San Francisco, she remained in the Pacific, ranging from the Arctic to Polynesia, to Central America until the spring of 1959.

Point Barrow, Alaska
August, 1955

We're seeing a lot of USS Mount Olympus
After an overhaul in Norfolk from December to March 1953, when her helicopter deck was also installed, she served in the U.S. Atlantic Fleet until 5 January 1955, when she sailed for the Panama Canal and San Diego, California, arriving on 23 January 1955.

Having participated in exercise Surfboard with the 38th Infantry Regiment from Washington State off the coast of San Simeon, California in mid-March,[1] Mount Olympus proceeded to Arctic waters as part of Project 572 in support of the Distant Early Warning Line. While underway from Point Barrow, Alaska to Point Hope, she became icebound, but was freed by the icebreaker Burton Island. Having sustained damage to structural bulkheads from the ice pressure, the ship was repaired by Current in Point Hope. Mount Olympus returned to San Diego on 29 September and on 31 October 1955, she proceeded to Mare Island Naval Shipyard for deactivation.

0052 Commenced maneuvering to take USNS Miller in tow.
0250 Tow is made ready. Underway on various courses and speeds.
0331 While steering 080T at 30 rpm. Ship is grounded aft on shoal.
0425 Received tow line from USS Current forward.
0630 USCGC Northwind placed tow wire on stem of USNS Miller.
0644 USCGC Northwind commenced towing Miller and Burton Island.
0652 Burton Island free.
0655 Cast off Current tow wire.
0723 Commenced maneuvering on various courses and speeds towing Miller.
They had a towing accident the day before with the USNS Archer T. Gammon when the tow line slipped from the crotch causing some minor damage.

Thursday 18 August 1955

Another day in the Arctic. Note: somewhat redacted.
00 to 04. Steaming enroute Herschel Island. Steaming at various courses and speeds as ice conditions permit in company with USS Andromeda and USNS Miller. USNS Miller lying to in ice bearing 105T, distance 8 miles from USS Andromeda and USS Burton Island.

0655 USS Merrick and USNS Miller proceeding to Camden Bay while USS Andromeda checks rudder. Lying to awaiting results of Andromeda rudder check.
0856 Anchored with the following bearings, Savakuik Point bearing 232.8T. Duchess Island bearing 132.5T.
0920 Lt. R. A. Hoar, Bennett, BM1 and Hartz, ME3 (divers) left the ship to perform diving operations on the USS Andromeda.

1235 Commenced maneuvering to take USS Andromeda in to while at anchor.
1243 Messenger over, commenced heaving in anchor.
1249 Diving party returned to the ship.
1355 Anchor aweigh, commenced maneuvering with Andromeda in tow to come to base course 105.
1423 While swinging on approximate course 140, Andromeda heading 190, the cable slacked (with minimum strain and maximum possible catenary) and parted, about 30 feet from Andromeda.
1424 All engines stop.
1427 Let go starboard anchor. Anchored on the following bearings: House on Alaska mainland 190, 10,500 yards, Sight 233, 19,100 yards, Duchess Island 151, 5100 yards. Andromeda anchored 259 1000 yards from us.
1556 Underway to new anchorage 250 yards, 82 ahead of USS Andromeda.

1612 Anchored with USS Andromeda 258 yards 80 at anchor.
1742 Repairs effected on tow wire. Commenced making preparations to tow USS Andromeda.

1940 First line over to USS Andromeda.

2017 2 inch wire secured to USS Andromeda.
2025 Anchor aweigh. Proceeding on various courses and speeds towing USS Andromeda toward Barter Island.

0750 Manila towline parted. Commenced rigging 2" steel tow wire to USS Merrick.

0835 Underway with USS Merrick in tow on base course 080T.
1141 Wire strap on tow line parted. Lying to while repairing tow wire.
1145 Maneuvering thru ice.

1306 Commenced making preparations to take USS Merrick in tow.
1323 Merrick in tow. Maneuvering on base course 075.
1435 Disengaged from Merrick, steaming in open water.
1510 Lying to.

16 to 18 Proceeding to Camden Bay to assist USS Andromeda.

Or maybe it's the same towline, and they keep repairing it, but not enough to actually fix it?

I think they've fixed it. On 22 August they went back and picked up USS Andromeda. They started towing here at 0417 and by 1854 they made it to Barter Island with no incidents. At 2125 they got underway, towing Andromeda to Herschel Island. We'll see how that works out. :D

0242 Commenced steaming on course 125T.

0430 Upon being stopped by a small ice floe, the USS Andromeda collided with this vessel at frame 182 making a wedge shaped vertical hole in the port quarter, 2 1/2 feet wide and 5 feet long, 5 feet above the water line. No personnel casualties. Starboard leg of towing bridle carried away.
0515 USS Andromeda anchored.
0530 Disconnected tow wire.
0550 Anchored in 8 fathoms of water on the following bearings: Pingokraluk Mound 144, Survey Target 172, Survey Target 153. Commenced repairing damage to port quarter.

1901 Underway on various courses and speeds for scouting ice conditions to Eastward. 1949 Reversed course to return to the USS Andromeda.

2150 Underway with USS Andromeda in tow on base course 105T enroute Herschel Island.

They finally got Andromeda to Herschel Island without incident! However their success in towing is brief.

1730 Starboard towing bridle on Timber Hitch parted. Preparing to bring in tow line.
1740 Anchored.

1853 Underway steering various courses and speeds proceeding southeastward toward USS Grapple. 2 inch towing wire secured to Timber Hitch.

2053 Parted towing chain.
2055 Stopped to make repairs to towing chain.
2345 Underway with Timber Hitch in tow.
