Log Pages for Transcribing - Apply here!

Post by ggordon »

Welcome to the log book of the Navarch 1892 - 1893 Captains William B. Ellis (New Bedford to Honolulu) and Joseph A. Whiteside (Honolulu to the Arctic). On voyage from the 6th July 1892 to the 30th November 1893.

If you would like to work on a section of the log please
  • leave a note in the next available reply section of this board below
  • remember to say which section you would like to work on
  • a link to the workbook, for your transcriptions, will be provided to you in this board
  • let us know if you would rather work in Excel, LibreCalc, or Google Sheets
  • each section of the log must be transcribed by three different transcribers
Where to start once I have my log section and workbook?
Please ensure that you read these information pages before transcribing
1) Transcribing: capturing the log details, and information resources
2) Transcribing: managing your recording workbook

Dates are in the format YYYYMMDD. Links to log book pages are shown in blue
THE ARCHIVE PAGES CAN BE VERY SLOW TO LOAD. Go back to a previous date and 'flip right' to get to your chosen page. The Archives are aware of this problem.

E arboggs (Strm A); marmaduke (Strm B); (Strm C) shiplover 18930313 18930716 Honolulu to Indian Point Log starts on Civil time but will switch between Civil and Sea time.
F (Strm A); marmaduke (Strm B); (Strm C) shiplover 18930717 18931130 St. Lawrence Isl back to Honolulu Log switches between Civil and Sea time. Pages 112 and 113 are blank.

Notes
  • *Sections A, B, C, and D will be transcribed last to allow for transcription of ice data to be collected as soon as possible.
  • The logbook in sections E and F switches between Civil and Sea time. The captain writes which time on top left or in left margin of the pages. Port, or when stuck in ice he switches to Civil time, when sailing or able to move he switches to Sea time.
  • There are a couple of interesting notes after returning to Honolulu as the Captain shares a wee bit about his journey home.
  • Please see comments on sections B and D as these two sections may contain content some may prefer to avoid.

Thank you for your help :)

Right-you-are-then!! Enjoy Honolulu - it's a warmer winter stop-over to wind up at, rather than chilly San Fran ;D Do you need a transcription file? Let me know if you do ;)
