Northwind (1954) -- Discussion: Questions, Comments and Coordination

Post by Randi »

On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances, courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record Sea Conditions or Swells from.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea columns.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae and volcanic activity should be reported in the forum.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.
(If one transcriber does events and weather and they are in the same image, the date is only entered once.)

See Northwind -- General for some general background and discussion.
See Northwind -- Examples for a quick introduction to transcribing or a refresher.
See the Transcribing Guide to learn how to transcribe the data.
Post in Ask Questions Here or this topic if you have questions.

March and April uploaded - she was in Seattle the whole time for the latter, so it was quick.

Jan and Feb are missing, I will do the rest of the year.

Good stuff. This is where I am: 29.47 112.96. About 550 miles to go up river and then Panay II will be done. I will be very happy to get back to steaming up and down the Inside Passage!

July done. They went to Alaska via the inside - tedious as always.

On to August. Looks like there will be ice.

On August 21st, the Northwind made the first known W to E transit of the McLure Strait, in the far north of Canada:

The keeper also referenced to a ship looking for the Franklin Expedition that tried to do that in 1850-1851, but failed.
Fascinating!

That's what I love about these logs!

August done and uploaded. There was a lot of ice, as she took part in an expedition to the far north of Canada, with the Burton Island and a Canadian ship called "Labrador".

On to September, and the conclusion of the expedition.

You can read about the CCGS Labrador here. She was built using the US Wind Class ice breaker design which was based on a Russian design from WW I, if I remember correctly. Yes, here. This ship has an interesting history, as does the CCGS Labrador.
Although the Krassin never served in the Coast Guard, the service gained valuable knowledge about icebreakers that was put to use in the design of the Wind class icebreakers.[3]

September completed. The expedition came to a conclusion, and she returned to Seattle.
Now let's see how fast I can cut through the remaining months...

October knocked out already. She was in Seattle the whole time, only noticeable thing was that they used green ink a couple times.
On to November.

November done. She did a short trip to Bangor and Manchester, Washington, apparently to deliver munitions, but that was all.
On to December - the end is nigh for another year!
