Where is Pommystuart?
Re: Where is Pommystuart?
Maybe the first town is St. George? And town number two: Dirranbandi.
Re: Where is Pommystuart?
I'm voting for St George, too. looks like a nice little town. Have fun. Stay well.

Re: Where is Pommystuart?
St George is not the place. It was Hebel
Dirranbandi is correct.
Next night we free camped outside a pub "just up the road". Pub name please.
The Pub was built in 1864. It's believed to be one of Queensland's oldest pubs that has been open non-stop.
For many years, from the late 1800s to the early 1900s, it was a stop for Cobb & Co coaches. These coaches were like old-time buses that carried people and mail.
In 1999, a movie called Paperback Hero was filmed in this area. It starred famous actors like Hugh Jackman and Claudia Karvan.
A school called Nindi Gully State School opened on March 6, 1922. A very special student from this school was Len Waters (1924–1993). He later became Australia's only First Nations fighter pilot. The school closed around 1941.
From the pub we travelled up to a town with a name which has no connection to a historical person. Town name please.
This persons fame extended across the Christian world. The earliest evidence for his existance is a mid-4th-century inscription from Syria. This refers to his martyrdom, which was likely on 23 April, his holy day.
Following Henry V's victory at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, this persons day become one of the most important feast days in the English calendar.
Three days later we stopped in a caravan park in a town associated with these facts.
In 1970, Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip, and Princess Anne visited Australia. Princess Anne spent three days on a working sheep station near this place. She flew to the town and then travelled by road to the station. She saw sheep shearing and wool classing, and even went for a horse ride.
In 1880 the Bank of Queensland in this town was robbed. The severity of the robbery punishment is linked to a big change in how serious crimes were punished in Queensland.
Three questions about the last town.
1. Town name
2. What was the name of the bank robber in "The Famous Robbery of 1880"?
3. Where does a tree fit into the robbery story?
Dirranbandi is correct.

Nindigully and Dirranbandy pubs were partly staffed by German backpackers.

Re: Where is Pommystuart?
1. Cunnamulla
2. Joseph Wells
3. After the robbery, Wells hid in the Robbers Tree, on the edge of Cunnamulla

A sheep dog tracked the robber, who was the last person hanged in Australia for a robbery with wounding. Safe travels!

Re: Where is Pommystuart?
All done up to now.
I cut my 3 week trip down to 2 weeks for medical reasons.
From Cunnamulla we went "bush"
Next town.
Opal Mining: It is famous for its opal mining, with the Queen Opal Centre being a notable attraction.
Historical Significance: The town has a rich history, with the Queen Hotel named after Isabel Gray, a local legend and opal trader.
Natural Attractions: Visitors can enjoy artesian mud baths, the life-sized Diprotodon statue and the remains of a lizard racding track. and you have the opportunity to experience secluded camping in the Billabong.
Local Produce: It is known for its award-winning outback honey, produced by beekeepers who bring their hives to the region.
This small town offers a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and outdoor activities, making it a fascinating destination for travelers and residents alike.

Re: Where is Pommystuart?
Next stop.
An artesian bore was drilled in the late 1800s and taps into the Great Artesian Basin, providing the town’s water supply and powering the hydropower plant. When the bore was drilled, water was first found at a 795-metre depth. With around 1300 cubic metres of water at 84°C produced per day, the pressure was used to generate the town’s electricity supply.
This was the first hydroelectric power plant in Australia, (and only the third in the world at that time) showcasing early 20th-century architecture and the town's pioneering spirit.
Leahy House: A museum that provides insight into the history of the town and its residents.
Old Jail: A stark contrast to the town's picturesque attractions, offering a glimpse into the harsh conditions faced by prisoners in the early 1900s.

I know, but I'm not telling. Here's a photo of the house where Galloping Jack Watts lived.
