Muster Rolls of U.S.S. Lackawanna, 1872-1873

On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances (nautical miles and tenths), courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record State of the Sea.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea column.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae, volcanic, and seismic activity should be reported in the forum.
The names of US Navy and Coast Guard ships met should be noted. This gives the science team a chance to compare weather readings. You can include all ships mentioned in a single entry without a time or any additional data.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.

See Lackawanna: general for some general background and discussion.
See Lackawanna: examples for a quick introduction to transcribing or a refresher.

See Transcribing Guide to learn how to transcribe the data.

I will try my hand at May. If all goes well, I'll claim the remainder of the unclaimed months. If Sleepyowl hasn't gotten through Nov/Dec, then I can claim the whole year.

SleepyOwl is busy with USS Ashuelot so, as far as I'm concerned, you can have the whole year.

Meteors observed on multiple nights in late July, early Aug. Best guess is a witnessing of the Perseids meteor shower. From google search: "They peak on warm August nights as seen from the northern hemisphere. The Perseids are active from July 17 to August 24. They reach a strong maximum on August 12 or 13, depending on the year."

August 25, 1872 was quite the day. Large storm (gale) with high winds and noticeable, rapid shifts in barometric pressure. Also from August 24 - August 25 watched the PMS America go up in flames, before being towed to shore where it would sink. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_America_(1869)
