1874 - The Unalashka post office was established, then discontinued nine months later. It was reestablish as Ounalaska in 1892 and the name changed to Unalaska in 1898.
Perhaps this explains some of the spelling in the logs!

Re: Alaska miscellany
Fun facts, Juneau is now the capital of Alaska and is the second largest city by area in the US of A. It has no roads connecting it to the rest of the state!
Re: Alaska miscellany
I hadn't realized it covered that large an area.

The Heritage of Alaska Episode 8: William Dall-Alaska's Man of Science
Kevin wrote:Wed May 31, 2017 6:21 pm This month marks the 100th anniversary of the NOAA Corps, one of the uniformed services of the United States. The history of its direct predecessor, the US Coast Survey, extends back to the early 19th century. It is interesting to consider that William Dall, a Coast Survey scientist, conducted the first hydrographic section of the Bering Strait in September 1881 from the USCS schooner 'Yukon' (an OW ship by the way). One of his aims was to investigate the impact of a hypothetical warm Pacific Ocean inflow on the Arctic, and to distinguish its effect from local solar heating in the Chukchi Sea. Elements of this question still motivate our work with NOAA 56, made possible in large part because of the skill of our commissioned NOAA Corps pilots.
