Log Pages for Transcribing - Apply here!

Post by ggordon »

Welcome to the log book of the Navarch 2nd March 1897 to 14th October 1897. Mastered by Joseph Whiteside. Log book kept by Thomas Birnbaum and two others.

If you would like to work on a section of the log please
  • leave a note in the next available reply section of this board below
  • remember to say which section you would like to work on
  • a link to the workbook, for your transcriptions, will be provided to you in this board
  • let us know if you would rather work in Excel, LibreCalc, or Google Sheets
Each section of the log must be transcribed by three different transcribers

Where to start once I have my log section and workbook?
Please ensure that you read these information pages before transcribing
1) Transcribing: capturing the log details, and information resources
2) Transcribing: managing your recording workbook

Dates are in the format YYYYMMDD. Links to log book pages are shown in blue. Completed sections are shown in bold.

Hello and welcome to OldWeather Whaling manneaej :)

I just updated this page. There's certainly room to do section C of the voyage. Looks like it will turn out to be exciting when the ship is abandoned. You will see the name of other ships in the logbook that also appear in the whaling shipyards here on the forum. It was a bad winter for them!

Please can you let me know if you like to work in Excel, LibreCalc or Googlesheets? Then I can send you the transcription workbook. I will also put in the first few days of the logbook to show how it works. You will have lots of questions so always feel very welcome to ask about them here and I will reply. Whaling is my area of expertise :)

Looking forward to our reply! Joan (AvastMH) :)

Oh right! Thanks for getting back so quickly.... I'll set up that workbook for you. I will need to send it to you tomorrow because it's very late here in the UK now. What would be a good idea is simply to read the log book from this page https://archive.org/details/logbookofna ... 6/mode/1up to the end when she's abandoned to get a feel for his writing.
There's one or two strange spellings, for example 'a glack' actually means o'clock. There's a few tips here: viewtopic.php?p=267#p267
I see that the first few days include a list of the crew members and you might want to do a list like the earlier crew list shown in this post: viewtopic.php?p=263#p263 Don't worry about posting it here, I can help with that soon.

It looks like a cold session - I remember reading this in summer and being grateful to think of the cold. In winter I'm thinking that wearing an extra jumper might be good ;) I'll be back tomorrow with your workbook. :)
