Got all excited for a minute, thought we were on the move after a few months at Amoy.
Not so, just out of the harbour for gunnery practice and back to Amoy. :cry:

Sept 12th 08:00hrs
Confined Walter Jackson (OS) in double irons by order of the Comd'g officer. Charged by the British Authorities at Hong Kong as having been implemented in a mutiny, which occurred some time since on board the British Ship "Salsuma" and directed by Admiral Pennock to be held in safe keeping until turned over for trial the the above authorities.

Sept 14th 23:15hrs.
Walter Jackson (OS) escaped from the brig and jumped overboard, lowered the dinghy and made an unsuccessful search for him.

Sept 15th 1200
Walter Jackson (OS) was brought on board from the Consulate jail and confined in double irons by order of the Comd'g Officer.

My guy on the Omaha was in single irons, under supervision and he managed to jump overboard and get away. He was declared a deserter a few days later.

21st Sept 1874.
End of log * point referring to the 0800 watch.
* This watch was stood by Master R.A. Breck who lost his life by drowning before the smooth log was written.

22nd Sept.
Sent 1 Cutter & Whale Boat to look for the remains of Master R.A. Breck reported to have been drowned while bathing on a beach island of Kulangseu at 6AM
13:00 Whale Boat returned and shortly after 1st Cutter.
Sent a party to drag for the remains of Master Breck

23rd Sept.
Sent launch and Whale boat with howitzer grapnels to renew the search for the body of Master R.A. Breck.
0930 Whale boat returned after an unsuccessful search for the body of Master R.A. Breck.
1430 Sent an officer and 20 men to drag for the remains of Master Breck.
At 1830 the party which had been dragging for the body of Master R.A. Breck returned unsuccessfully.

25th. Sept.
1800 Recovered the remains of the late Master R.A. Breck USN.
The remains of the late Master R.A. Breck USN were sent with the proper escort to the Mortuary Chapel Kulangseu to remain their pending arrangements for burial.

26th Sept.
1615 The funeral party for the burial of the remains of the late Master R.A. Breck USN left the ship.
Funeral parties from the English & Japanese men of war assisted in the ceremony.
Half masted the Ensign on the departure of the part.
1750 Funeral party returned to the ship.

Love the terminology.

Passed Assistant Engineer G.H. Hall having been condemned by medical survey board was detached from this ship and ordered to return to the United States. [No mention of how]

1218hrs Went out to search for boats or passengers from PMSS " Japan"

20th DEC

A white object was reported floating upon the water to the Ed
Stood over to it and found it to be a metallic life boat with the letter 'd' on the bow.
Sent a ships boat and took it in tow.
Also found numerous charred timbers of a wreck floating, which were supposed to have belonged to the MPS "Japan"

At 1845 stopped engines and hoisted in Japans life boat lowered a Whale boat and examined articles found floating, passed many charred fragments barrels, & bags of flour.
At 2020 sighted a white object broad off the stbd bow. Stood for it and found it to be a metallic life boat floating upright with the letter ‘J’ on bows and marked “Japan” on after side of the for’d air compartment, supposed to have belonged to the late PMS “Japan” Hoisted in inboard.

23rd DEC
Turned over to PMSS Co two metallic life boats picked up by us at sea on the 20 inst.
