Hi Randi,

I don't know what was in this post, but my Avast Anti-virus came up with a warning. Your post, to me, is empty.

There is a beacon on Camp Point, British Columbia described in the 1930 pilot on p384
https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=W-A ... ia&f=false

The Point is on the database at http://www.geonames.org/5914513/camp-point.html
Pioneer references the beacon (somewhat illegibly so need the Hi-res image )

It's still active nowadays: https://fishing-app.gpsnauticalcharts.c ... -125.82725

And it's practically on the point. On google it's totally covered by trees, but it's indistinctly visible (you need to know there's a beacon there!) on bing satellite imagery (https://www.bing.com/maps?cp=50.384251% ... .3&style=a).

I've just added it to the db, thanks studentforever!

There is also a lighthouse on the northern point of Genn Island, British Columbia

OK Pioneer has crossed the border but she's at it again = this time it's a light vessel!! Getting light vessel sites in British Columbia is more than challenging = information on the ships but sites. She just passed Pachena Point Lighthouse and she cites a light vessel but I can't find it. I wondered if it might mark the Darling River but Google was very uncooperative and wouldn't cough up meaningful results. It's somewhere between Pachena Point and Sherringham Point but where?

British Columbia maps and places can be a little more complicated to find (no topoview or noaa), but Pioneer is fortunately pretty close the border and in a quite well known area.
Also they are keeping good record of course and patent log changes and so we know they were 5.8 miles abeam Pachena Light at 11.08, and that they first saw the light vessel at 11.43... it's sufficient info to draw their course and be pretty confident on where they are when they see the light vessel.

The lightship is most surely the Swiftsure Light Vessel, right in front of the entrance of Juan de Fuca Strait, which was active 1909-1961.
In 1925 the ship serving as light vessel should be the LV-93 (http://www.uscglightshipsailors.org/swi ... istory.htm).
Despite the underwater bank being closer to Canada than the States, the ship was an US Lighthouse Service vessel (and later an US Coast Guard one).

Edit: I've recalculated and included the 12:09 position... it's definitely abeam, even if a little short in comparison with the 2.2 miles stated in log (not too much, maybe 0.2/0.3 miles).

We already have it on db and it's on geonames, position 48.54317, -125.00068

Talk about service!! The absence of data from Google is also now explicable - I was looking for a Canadian light vessel!! (the last couple of sightings were Canadian after all)

Thanks again

They must have been hurrying to return home :D it's the first time i see a light vessel mentioned without its name!
There was just that one in the area so it's hard to make mistakes (the Umatilla Reef one is far to the south and its not encountered when going to Seattle) but I've always found the name written down in the logs

There is a light on Walker Island (Camp Island) in Lama Passage
https://waves-vagues.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/libr ... 115910.pdf
The reference is on page 1-25, since there seems no way of locating that page via a designated page in the weblink.

Yeah it's always an issue linking things inside pdfs, the page number is sufficient :D

I've just added Walker Island Light with alternate name Camp Island Light to the database (and slightly moved island position as it was a little off place), thanks!

Pioneer also references Kynumpt Harbor Gas Buoy, well I haven't located the gas buoy but the harbour is at Lat 52.21, Long -128.17
https://www.geonames.org/5994714/kynumpt-harbour.html

Later on she references Idol Point Light. Well Idol Point is referenced below
https://www.geonames.org/5979321/idol-point.html
but no lighthouse although it does appear in lists of lights where only the index is on line!!
e.g. https://www.google.co.uk/books/edition/ ... +british+t

She also references somewhere on Lowe Inlet. The only reference to Lowe inlet which seems helpful is a stub on Wikipedia. However there are some useful sources in one of the links.https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.p ... e:landmark

Another landmark I can't find is Lawson Light. The nearest reference I have found is a Lawson Harbour. The only link giving a location I have found is this one
https://www.canmaps.com/topo/places/j/jcktl.htm

There is a light on the northern part of Herbert Reefs, perhaps they are calling it Lawson Light. 54.02351, -130.23861 You can see it on Google Earth.

The fishing app shows what may be your gas buoy here: 52.2139, -128.1575

And, the fishing app shows a light on Idol Point. It's hard to see on with Google Earth.

I've added all to the database. Thanks!

Agree with Michael both for Lawson Light being current Herbert Reefs Light and for the gas buoy... there's another candidate north of the shoals, but BC is always a pain for historical maps, so i'd go for the most probable one being our best guess.

For Idol Point Bing satellite imagery is not much better defined than Google one, but in both a thin white pole pointing to northwest and casting a shadow can be seen immediately north of the trees and west of promontory center... that's the light.

I think Geonames should give you a medal, the number of obscure sites you have located and added to their database. Thanks.

You're too kind :D
Don't think there's something as a medal, but I'm a level3 editor if that distinction still exist, which means i can move pretty everything around (most important places, and sensible ones, were locked from edits by newbies and lower level users) 8-)
