The actual link for your bay is here: http://www4.rncan.gc.ca/search-place-names/unique/LAPID

You will see a link near the bottom of the page for the NWT place names. If you click on that link and enter the id LAPID into the search box, you will find:
Named by John Richardson, 1826, “out of respect to Capt. George McKinley, of the Naval asylum”. Named during Franklin’s Second Overland Expedition.
Thank you Michael! And for the history extras :)

Still trying to locate another odd place. Beluga 1897-1899 log. McKenna harbor

Sept 5th 1897

Image

It is described as about 40 miles south of Cape Perry. The following day they are in 'Langden Harbor' which might be Langton Bay.

Here are two points, 40 miles south of Cape Parry. One is 40 miles due South, True, and the other is 40 miles due south Magnetic for the year 1897. (56 degree declination) I added places from the Canadian database of Geographic names. Google earth hides names that are too close together, so you have to zoom in with Google Earth to see them all.

That's a great pair of maps Michael - the P2s are a long way apart! And thanks for the zoom-ins. I'd drilled right down a few times but with no luck - and checked all of the alternative name entries of course :(
I peeled through Bodfish's book 'Chasing the Bowhead' in case further clues turned up, but with no luck.

In the same date's entry he notes:
Bealeana [...] started east came back too anchor 4 pm Narwhal & Grampus coming up from the southward.

The previous day he noted:
gammed Bealeana Narwhal Grampus Baelena & Beluga steaming along the land E.

Which all makes me think that McKenna harbor is probably closer to P2 True, rather than P2 Magnetic.

I thought we'd decided it might have been Argo Bay. Wasn't there some mention of a spit?

Thanks for the reminder MIchael :) There is mention of a spit and it where you'd expect to find 'McKenna harbor'. The area is littered with spits, but these are very 'definite', if that's a possible description.

Matteo, please could you register:
Argo Bay
5886832
H BAY bay
Canada CA » Northwest Territories 13
69.3837, -124.46548

And note an alternative name of 'McKenna Harbor'? Many thanks :)

I was totally sure to have already looked around for McKenna Harbor and Langdon Bay (which is already in db)... maybe we talked in pm about it?

I remember finding a few (non conclusive) maps and a link regarding captain McKenna who had been roaming the area, but cannot find the discussion anymore... i was pretty sure one of the two harbors was the area most sheltered from winds and currents inside Langdon Bay, immediately after the entrance spit.

There was a mention last year in Alaskan Place Names -- Discussion. Is that what you are thinking of?

Thanks Randi and Matteo! Why on earth did I put that in Alaska? :o   I even wrote that it was in the Northwest Territories. Gah!!

At any rate Michael and I are happy enough to rate Argo Bay as 'McKenna Bay'. Would it be possible to add Argo Bay to the Canadian Reference listing with 'possibly McKenna Bay' as an alternative name? I've noted that in the transcription workbook at any rate. Then it's up to Kevin to decide. :?
