Kearsarge (1862): links, questions, comments, coordination, ... NONSTANDARD

Post by Randi »

Not currently being transcribed

Image access does not work the way it does in our other logs.
The JPG Link will open the first image for the month, but you cannot edit the link to get another page.
You will probably find it easier to use the NARA URL to view pages or open them from the Tracker.

Generally, weather data is not recorded when they are in port.
However, barometer readings are sometimes entered with the events.
This is valuable data, so please transcribe it.

On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances (nautical miles and tenths), courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record State of the Sea.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea column.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae, volcanic, and seismic activity should be reported in the forum.
The names of US Navy and Coast Guard ships met should be noted. This gives the science team a chance to compare weather readings. You can include all ships mentioned in a single entry without a time or any additional data.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.

See Kearsarge: general for some general background and discussion.
See Kearsarge: examples for a quick introduction to transcribing or a refresher.

See Transcribing Guide to learn how to transcribe the data.

Let's wait a while just to see what's involved. Don't rush into anything until we've had a chat.

19 February

8 AM to Merid
Note: Yesterday forenoon discovered two 225 gallon tanks to contain salt water which, together with the two tanks found empty on the 17th, make a loss of 1410 gallons. Unfortunately the discovery of Salt water in the tanks was not made until it was partly pumped into another tank containing 200 gallons of good water, thus increasing our loss to 1610 gallons and leaving on hand but 300 gallons.

Steam was got up in the Donkey boiler and the attempt made to convert salt water into fresh but, owing to heavy rolling, have not yet succeeded in making any fit to drink.

At 6:45 PM the USS Ino arrived. The Wiki article is very interesting. Here's a relevant excerpt.
Her first duty began 27 September when she departed Boston, Massachusetts, in search of "rebel pirates." When word came that the South's famed cruiser CSS Sumter, under the brilliant master of seamanship, Captain Raphael Semmes, was in European waters, Ino sailed from Boston 5 February 1862 and reached Cadiz, Spain, only 13 days and 16 hours later. She assisted USS Kearsarge and USS Tuscarora to blockade Semmes at Gibraltar where he vainly sought repairs. Semmes finally abandoned Sumter there in order to get back into action. An interesting side light to this operation occurred at Tangier, Morocco 26 February when Ino took two crewmen of Sumter from a threatening mob and turned the prisoners over to the Boston-bound American merchant ship Harvest Home.

8 May
Cadiz, Spain.

8 to Meridian
On opening forward shell rooms discovered the receiving pipe which runs through Starboard shell room leaking badly in three places, the lower tier of shells covered with water, there being about 13 inches on the shell room floor. Broke out both shell rooms after bailing out the water. Discovered also water coming through underneath the after bulkheads. This leak accounts for the water in fore hold. After shutting off the force pump the water disappeared. Caulked forward shell rooms bulkheads. Sent on shore for Plumbers to repair leak.
They've been spending a lot of time pumping water over the last few weeks.

13 July
Algeciras Roadstead, Spain.
At 6:45 while the crew were bathing alongside, a Ground Shark made his appearance, seized and carried down downward Edward Thibbetts (O.S.). The crew of the boat, which pulled to his assistance, last saw Thibbetts and the Shark three fathoms under water, slowly descending, the water being perfectly calm.

Reminds me of years ago I worked with someone who was ex-military and eligible to shop at the nearby Navy commissary. He used to bring home beer he purchased there that had a label attached that said, "For Military Use Only."
