As can be seen below, images for this year cover two days since each day is a single log page.
This requires a special system to transcribe.

Muster Rolls of U.S.S. Shenandoah 1863-1866

On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances (nautical miles and tenths), courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record State of the Sea.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea column.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae, volcanic, and seismic activity should be reported in the forum.
The names of US Navy and Coast Guard ships met should be noted. This gives the science team a chance to compare weather readings. You can include all ships mentioned in a single entry without a time or any additional data.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.

See Shenandoah: general for some general background and discussion.
See Shenandoah: examples for a quick introduction to transcribing or a refresher.

See Transcribing Guide to learn how to transcribe the data.

Friendly fire incident and a chase

Post by Michael »

August 7
Noon : Lat 33° 47' 00"N, Long 74° 36' 00"W

4AM to 8 AM
At 4 raised a steamer to Sd standing to the Nd. Challenged her and stopped engines. Challenged her twice afterward with signal lanterns. She burned Costons No. 7 and passed under our stern and fired a shot at us. We burned Costons No 7 and then challenged with Costons, which she answered, and hailed her. She proved to be the U.S.Str. Gettysburg. At 4:50 raised a steamer to the Sd and gave chase, the Gettysburg taking the lead by 2 lengths. The stranger proved to be a blockade runner Side Wheeler with USS Santiago de Cuba in chase. We soon dropped the Gettysburg astern. Exchanged signals with the Santiago. At 6 we could see that the chase had a deck load of cotton, and she began to throw it overboard. Set all for and aft sail, dgot up bent and set Fore & Mizzen stay sails. At 7 raised a steamer to the SE which proved to be the Quaker City who joined in the chase. The Santiago to Cuba gave up the chase and began to pick up cotton, of which the chase had thrown overboard, about 80 bales. At 7:45 lost sight of Santiago de Cuba. 7:50 took in all sail.
The Gettysburg gave up the chase at 8:00, as did we at 12:15. The Quaker City was unable to catch the blockade runner, who go away.

Here's an interesting article about Martha Coston who developed the Coston Signal Flare.

I've just finished transcribing this year. I have entered the first mention of each USS vessel that we encountered. Some names I couldn't read, and some of them were not listed with NARA. I didn't record any ships from other navies, or commercial vessels. Altogether, there were 89 Union vessels in my list! Something must have been happening off the East Coast of the US in 1864! :D :D :D

I know that some of you are interested in the U.S. Civil War, so for you, here is the list:

AGAWAM, ALABAMA, ARIES, ATLANTA, AUGUSTA, BRANDYWINE, BRITANNIA, CALIFORNIA, CALYPSO, CAMBRIDGE, CANONICUS, CHAMPION, CIRCASSIAN, COLORADO, COMMODORE BARNEY, COMMODORE PERRY, CONNECTICUT, DALE, DAWN, DAYLIGHT, DELAWARE, DON, EMMA, EUTAW, FAHKEE, FLORIDA, FORT JACKSON, GALENA, GETTYSBURG, GLAUCUS, GOVERNOR BUCKINGHAM, GRAND GULF, GREENE, HELIOTROPE, HENRY BRINKER, HOWQUA, HURON, IRON AGE, IROQUOIS, IUKA, JOHN GRIFFITH, KENSINGTON, KEYSTONE STATE, MACKINAW, MAHOPAC, MALVERN, MERCEDITA, MINNESOTA, MOHICAN, MONADNOCK, MONTGOMERY, MONTICELLO, MOUNT VERNON, NANSEMOND, NEREUS, NEW BERNE, NEW IRONSIDES, NIPHON, NITA, OSCEOLA, PEQUOT, PHELPS, POCAHONTAS, PRINCETON & CONSTELLATION, QUAKER CITY, QUEEN, R.R. CUYLER, RACHEL SEAMAN, ROANOKE, SAN JACINTO, SARATOGA, SASSACUS, SAUGUS, SENECA, STARS & STRIPES, STATE OF GEORGIA, STEPPING STONES, SUSQUEHANNA, TACONY, TECUMSEH, TICONDEROGA, TUSCARORA, UNADILLA, UNION, VANDERBILT, VERMONT, VICKSBURG, WABASH, WILDERNESS

For those interested enough to look in the log books about their participation in the Civil War and in particular, the Battle of Fort Fisher, the following ship logs have been scanned:

The Shenandoah took part in this action, which occurred on and after December 19. Not all the ships listed above took part in this battle, as these names were compiled during the year. The ones in NARA with logs for December 1864 have the link to their Wikipedia article.

One of the maps appeared to be upside down. Here it is, with Shenandoah's position in the 2nd column marked. You can see her quite clearly on the other map showing the positions of the ships.
