I never knew JD but the passing of any OWr is always a big loss.

Yantic Jan 6th 1873. Zanzibar, Africa.

0720 George Files (CM) died of disease of the heart.
1510 Called "all hands to bury the dead" and sent the body of George Files (CM) on shore for burial.

USS Lakawanna, 28 May 1867, Hanolai Bay, Kauai Island

At 9.10 am James Sancston, Quarter Gunner, departed this life.
At 9.50 sent a party on shore to dig a grave.
At 5pm the body of James Sancston (Q Gunner) was taken on shore to be buried, accompanied by his Messmates and a Corporals Guard of Marines.

Yantic 21st Sept 1874
End of log * point referring to the 0800 watch.
* This watch was stood by Master R.A. Breck who lost his life by drowning before the smooth log was written.

22nd Sept.
Sent 1 Cutter & Whale Boat to look for the remains of Master R.A. Breck reported to have been drowned while bathing on a beach island of Kulangseu at 6AM
13:00 Whale Boat returned and shortly after 1st Cutter.
Sent a party to drag for the remains of Master Breck

23rd Sept.
Sent launch and Whale boat with howitzer grapnels to renew the search for the body of Master R.A. Breck.
0930 Whale boat returned after an unsuccessful search for the body of Master R.A. Breck.
1430 Sent an officer and 20 men to drag for the remains of Master Breck.
At 1830 the party which had been dragging for the body of Master R.A. Breck returned unsuccessfully.

25th. Sept.
1800 Recovered the remains of the late Master R.A. Breck USN.
The remains of the late Master R.A. Breck USN were sent with the proper escort to the Mortuary Chapel Kulangseu to remain their pending arrangements for burial.

26th Sept.
1615 The funeral party for the burial of the remains of the late Master R.A. Breck USN left the ship.
Funeral parties from the English & Japanese men of war assisted in the ceremony.
Half masted the Ensign on the departure of the part.
1750 Funeral party returned to the ship.

USS Kearserge.
Monday September 9th. 1889.
0614 - Man fell overboard from port chains; let go life buoy within 1/2 ships length and at 0617 let go life boat.
Boat returned to ship with man at 0625 he proved to be D.C Chapman (ICA) and was very much exhausted, having failed to reach the buoy.
0945 DC Chapman (ICA) was pronounced to be dead, all efforts at resuscitation having proved unavailing.
At 1500 called “All hands bury the dead and the coffin containing the remains of CD Chapman (ICA) was lowered over the side into the whale boat. Three volleys were fired by the Marine guard. No funeral service was held on board as all arrangements for the service had been made on shore. The funeral party left the ship at 1320 in charge Lieut Cawles.
Exp’d 24 blank Winchester cartridges..
Funeral party returned from shore at 1645
