From log book of McMulloch Sept 7th 1899.

USS Thetis anchored.
Received an official call from the Comd'g officer of the Thetis. On examination of the upper strata of zinc sheeting, made by Comd'g officer and his first lieutenant, accompanied by the carpenter, the ship being light, discovered the fact that said strake is practically eaten away amidships and forward, showing large patches of felt through in many places, and that all of the 98 strakes constituting said strake are practically gone.
