Lost overboard by an idiot... (...or any other reason!)
Re: Lost overboard by an idiot... (...or any other reason!)
We used an axe to cut the hole in the ice. We were not happy to see the food go up in smoke.
We did, however, have a den with three wolves living near us, we saw tracks of a Barrenland Grizzly in the snow near our tents, and we saw a wolverine walking across the ice, so we didn't want any wildlife being too attracted to any meat. Daryl was with us for a little while, but he got very sick, not from the food, and he was flown out by a plane that was in our area and dropped in unexpectedly. It was one of only two times that happened in our time there.
Daryl is just over six feet tall, and standing at the bottom of our hole. We were afraid we would hit gravel before we hit water. The ice left the lake on July 4th. Other than Daryl, the three of us spent just over three months there. We were some of the few people on the planet who did not know that men had landed on the moon.

Definitely an interesting reason for not knowing about the moon landing! What great photos, thanks for sharing them!

Bears and wolves would be a further reason not to keep too much frozen meat around. And the chance that after all that digging you might hit gravel rather than water! That really sounds like an amazing trip.

Great stories and pics!
Re: Lost overboard by an idiot... (...or any other reason!)
You know, in 1867 it had to be pretty terrible for them to throw it overboard. I imagine this happened more often in the tropics than at higher latitudes...

USS Sacramento (1923), 1923-01-08:
And the Navy being what it is, accountability was ensured eleven days later on the 19th:At 8:00 Port Running Light lost overboard out of 1st Motor Sailor; responsibility RAMSKY, J. Cox, USN.
What is it with port running lights? @Hanibal94 reported the same mishap aboard the McCulloch back in 1900. I almost lost one off our own boat in rough seas a couple of years ago, but today we have electricity aboard so it was retained by its wire.At 11:00 the Captain held mast and assigned the following punishments;
RAMSKY, J. Cox, USN. Losing port running light overboard. Warning.
Re: Lost overboard by an idiot... (...or any other reason!)
When I was young, my dad and uncle built us each an eight foot Sabot sailboat. Needless to say, we had no running lights, port or starboard!
Sadly, I have no photos of mine. Photos taken from it, yes, but of it, no. This will have to do...

What great stories! Thanks Michael. Puts cleaning out my refrigerator in perspective.

Shenandoah (1879), p. 13, in the New York Navy Yard following a refit:
I wonder where it went. Do you suppose some lucky Brooklynite found a floating Bbl. of Navy beans a few hours later? All hands employed getting stores on board. Lost over board one Bbl. of beans

Just goes to show how long debris will stick around. https://apnews.com/article/science-new- ... 4516527ed5

Makes you wonder what else is just floating around still

USS Shenandoah, sailing from New York to Rio de Janeiro in October 1879, passed a floating wreck (p.54).Morgan wrote: ↑Fri Feb 24, 2023 9:55 pm Just goes to show how long debris will stick around. https://apnews.com/article/science-new- ... 4516527ed5
I imagine the sight gave some of them pause to reflect.

Yantic feeding the fish in Shanghai Hrb. 14/Sept/1873
Threw overboard 3500 lbs of condemned bread.
(Bet that cost them a lot of dough)
