Crew and ships met

Post by ggordon »

Please mention any names of ships seen, or met, or gamed with. It is possible that a nearby ship may have a latitude and longitude for that small area of sea, but that is missing from this ship's log. Equally this ship might provide the position of those other ships.

Not all logs provide a crew list. You might find names in the log to post here.

Bark Belvedere (ODHS Spool 545) On April 6th 1897 Henry Sullivan died.

Belvedere has just gone through a very heavy storm during the last few days of March 1897. Sails were torn, booms lost, boats lost, and the smoke stack carried away. The logkeeper notes that Henry Sullivan died on April 6th. By the next day they have arrived at Dutch Harbor (Aleutian Islands). On the following day, April 8th 1897, the sailmaker is buried.

There is a twin log (ODHS spool 222) which records the event with a little more detail with slight changes to the dates. April 7th 1897 'Henry Sullivan died with Pheoneomonia'

Rest in peace Mr Sullivan, Sailmaker of the Bark Belvedere

A sad day in the struggle to live through the Arctic winter. The Belvedere has taken the crew of the Orca on board. The Orca sank the previous autumn as the ice trapped these ships, and the ship 'Freeman'. The Freeman burnt to the water line and so the Belvedere is crammed full. The crew works to keep the sea ice from forming around the stern of the ship to prevent damage to the rudders and propellers whilst trapped.

On the 30th March 1898 the log reports:
'J Kelly one of Orca crew committed suicide jumping in stern hole found him dead'

The twin logbook of Belvedere also reports Mr Kelly's passing:
'Kelly the Orcas sick man suicided in the stern hole'

Rest In Peace Mr Kelly, so far from home.
