I've been to Cairns, we snorkeled.

I can only swim 5% horizontal and 95% vertically.
Closest I got to snorkelling was dressed in a life jacket and a couple of noodles and armed with my GoPro to film a whale shark at Ningaloo.
Even then I felt like I was going to drown. Great experience (the sight of the shark whale, not drowning).
