On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances (nautical miles and tenths), courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record State of the Sea.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea column.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae, volcanic, and seismic activity should be reported in the forum.
The names of US Navy and Coast Guard ships met should be noted. This gives the science team a chance to compare weather readings. You can include all ships mentioned in a single entry without a time or any additional data.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.

See Lackawanna: general for some general background and discussion.
See Lackawanna: examples for a quick introduction to transcribing or a refresher.

See Transcribing Guide to learn how to transcribe the data.

The only way is to upload the screenshot online somewhere and then use the image link for the url. Many of us use imgur.com for that purpose. It is free, and it will give you the necessary link to post an image.

For example:

They changed the way imgur operates. I found, after uploading an image, I had to go back to my images so I could see all my images. I could then double click on the image I want to see the screen as shown above.

I can't tell what this says. My best guess is something like Pay Nept. Is it a location? They later talk about a sending a swimming party ashore but I can't find any mention of where they are. (This is January 1st by the way)

Pay Dept (Department) 2083/4 lbs of Beef

The location is at the top of the left hand page: Panama, which at that time was part of the United States of Columbia.

Note that there is nothing that needs to be transcribed on this events page. However, reading the events page is my favorite part of transcribing ;)

For questions like this, just give the link to the image: https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorag ... 40-165.JPG

Imgur seems very clumsy to use now, although maybe it is because I haven't gotten used to the new system

You can also email images to moderatorcaro@gmail.com and one of us will reply.

We have currently have a ship with typed logs: USS Sacramento. That may be an easier starting point.

Depending on the year, you may see Panama N. G. for New Granada.
