Notable events: Oct 17, 1897 p. 63 The [first] mate of the
Balaena died. Oct 23 p. 64 A sailor aboard the
Narwhal died. Jan 25, 1898 p. 85 Captain Bodfish assisted Captain Tilton with the
amputation of one of his mens fingers. Feb 4 p. 87 One of the crewmen dropped dead
suddenly. He had not been feeling well prior to then, but had never been off duty.
Feb 11-12 p. 89-90 some men broke into storage areas and stole several items.
Captain Bodfish put the three men he suspected in irons. One confessed and the other
two did not. The next day the other two men confessed and implicated some other men.
They had all planned to desert their vessels. Feb 11 p. 89 A crewman died. Feb 20 p.
92 A group of men stole two sleds and 14 dogs. They were found and apprehended later
that day. Apr 18 p. 104 The wife of one of the men aboard the Narwhal died. May 21-22 p. 112-113 two rifles were found in a snowbank,
having been stolen and abandoned by some crew members. Captain Bodfish put two men in
irons but let them out later, and he did not find out who stole the rifles. Aug 26
p. 145 While whaling man stepped out onto the line, got it tangled around his leg,
fell overboard and drowned.

Death of an unnamed whalerman.
August 26th 1898 Probably close to Baillie Islands on the Canadian Northwest Territories coastline (70.58349 -128.17206)
'11 AM struck 1 man got foul in line was drowned & another was knocked over board but was saved.'
The man was buried the next day at 8-15 AM
