These logs are a window into the past.
You might want to research mentions of events or people in the log out of curiosity or simply to check the spelling.

I was trying to check the spelling of a marine's name and discovered a report of a yellow fever epidemic on the USS Jamestown.
The marine was the first person to catch it. Happily, he recovered.

A simple Google/DuckDuckGo/Bing search can be very effective,
but here is a list of publicly available archives that we have found useful: More specialized resources (e.g., US Navy officers' names) are in the appropriate boards and topics.
