Haida (1925) — Discussion: Questions, Comments and Coordination

Post by Randi »

On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances (nautical miles and tenths), courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record State of the Sea.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea column.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae, volcanic, and seismic activity should be reported in the forum.
The names of US Navy and Coast Guard ships met should be noted. This gives the science team a chance to compare weather readings. You can include all ships mentioned in a single entry without a time or any additional data.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.

See Haida — General for some general background and discussion.
See Haida — Examples for a quick introduction to transcribing or a refresher.

See Transcribing Guide to learn how to transcribe the data.
Post in Ask Questions Here or this topic if you have questions.

Thanks. Pachena was the only one I got.
Carmanah look easier to read when you have the correct place.
Michael can find me now from there on.

No idea with the other names.

Good job! :D :D :D

It's in the queue for processing. First I have to finish working on March 1943 for Haida.

We've done a couple that went through the Panama Canal. I suspect that one of these days we'll be doing the Greenland patrol.

26 May
Anchored at mouth of Naknek River, Kvichak Bay
1:10 PM. Sent motor launch with boarding party in charge of Ensign G. E. McCabe to make a thorough search of the S. S. Glacier. At 3:55 Ensign G. E. McCabe returned with the master Harold Warner of the Glacier. The following verbal report was made: That the Glacier left San Francisco May 16th. 560 workers and fisherman and crew for the Northern Fisheries Inc. Cannery at Naknek - the steamer belonging to company. That thorough search in which master and ship's officers did not reveal any concealed liquor among ship's stores or cargoes. That numerous workers had in their possessions in personal baggage 80 gallons of red wine and 20 gallons of moonshine liquor. As the officers and the ship did not contrive to break any laws and the workers were Italians and Mexicans with no conception of breaking laws and the impossible situation of getting tangible results owing to numbers involved and place - it was deemed wise to destroy the wine and liquor and take no further action. This was done for the best interest of the Cannery Industry which was beginning to operate and depending upon the labor of these men. Any other course would have involved loss of hundred of thousands of dollars to a legitimate industry.

5:55 Boarding party returned from "Glacier" , having completed destruction of wine and liquors found among workers and fisherman on board.

The voyage for 1925 has been completed, thanks to stellar work by Stuart. The log keeper is not known for his readable handwriting. The voyage can be viewed here and, for more detail, you can download the KML file and view it with Google Earth.
