Yantic (1875): links, questions, comments, coordination, ...

Post by Randi »

On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances (nautical miles and tenths), courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record State of the Sea.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea column.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae, volcanic, and seismic activity should be reported in the forum.
The names of US Navy and Coast Guard ships met should be noted. This gives the science team a chance to compare weather readings. You can include all ships mentioned in a single entry without a time or any additional data.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.

See Yantic: general for some general background and discussion.
See Yantic: examples for a quick introduction to transcribing or a refresher.

See Transcribing Guide to learn how to transcribe the data.

At sunrise dressed ship rainbow fashion in honor of Washington's birthday.

At 12:00 the "Hartford", Russian Corvette and H.M.S. Princess Charlotte fired each a salute of twenty one guns in honor of the day, it being Washington's birthday.

Let me repeat myself:
At noon dressed ship rainbow fashion in honor of the anniversary of the coronation of the Czar of Russia. U.S. Flagship "Hartford", H. I. M. S. "Ascald" and Gunboat H. M. S. "Princess Charlotte" and "Audacious" fired salutes of 21 guns.

I was worried about people's eardrums so I didn't note the Chinese gunboats and people on shore firing guns and setting off "crackers".

Hong Kong

This is a first. I don't remember ever seeing a salute for Belgium:
At 3:30 HMS "Audacious" & at 4 "Hartford" fired a salute of 7 guns with the Belgian flag at the Fore.
I did find a nice photo of USS Hartford

September 10
U.S. Ship Benj. Sewall left harbor.
I wondered if it was USS Benj. Sewall or a U.S. registered ship, Benjamin Sewall. It was the latter, and I found an interesting account of her.

03 November
Yokohama
At 8 dressed ship with Japanese flag at the Main in honor of birthday of H.J.M. the Mikado of Japan.
At Meridian all the Men-of-War with the exception of H.B.M. Ship "Curlew" and this vessel fired a salute of 21 Guns.
U.S.S. Saco has the Senior Commander's flag. I assume there is another British Ship that has the British Senior Commander's flag.

By order of Comd'g Officer released T. B. Sullivan (1-SF) from confinement and placed him on full rations under Sentry's charge, it being the opinion of the Surgeon that he is not of sane mind.
