Muster Rolls of U.S.S. Yantic 1873-1877

On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances (nautical miles and tenths), courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record State of the Sea.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea column.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae, volcanic, and seismic activity should be reported in the forum.
The names of US Navy and Coast Guard ships met should be noted. This gives the science team a chance to compare weather readings. You can include all ships mentioned in a single entry without a time or any additional data.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.

See Yantic: general for some general background and discussion.
See Yantic: examples for a quick introduction to transcribing or a refresher.

See Transcribing Guide to learn how to transcribe the data.

From what I understand, Yantic was in Penang and Singapore in March and April 1873, so I would like to reserve those two months. :owl:

I'm glad you're on this one and not a newbie. They would run away screaming, and we would never see them again!

ggordon wrote: Thu Mar 09, 2023 7:26 am I think what looks like "ramif" is "rainy". There is a dot over what looks like an "m', so I believe the m is actually "in". I believe what looks like a separate letter prior to the "f" at the end, is actually the beginning of the letter "y", so that what looks like an "if" at the end is actually the letter "y", the dot belonging to the earlier "i" in the word.

The t at the start in WX confused me as it is different to the ones towards the end of am.

18th June 1873

By order of Rear Admiral Thornton, A Jenkins, Commander Byron Wilson was suspended from command of this vessel and Lieut Comd'r G.W. Pigman assumed temporary command.

21st June 1873
0955 Comd'r Wilson left the ship to appear before a General Court Martial.
At 1135 he returned.
At 1000 General Court Martial assembled on board "Lackawana" and at 1130 adjourned.

23rd, 24th, 25th and 26th
Court Martial resumed and Comd'r Wilson left the ship to appear before the General Court Martial each day.

26th June 1873
1114 Commander Byron Wilson USN was detached and ordered home by Admiral Jenkins.

The following 10 lines in the log listed the dis-rating of many of the crew by order Comd'r Wilson. {Talk about spitting the dummy} :o

27th June 1873
Comd'r O.F. Stanton assumed command of the vessel.
1620 Comd'r Wilson left the ship having been suspended by the sentence of a General Court Martial and ordered to proceed to the United States.
2000 The resignation of Pay Clerk WW Smith was accepted and he left the ship.

[the plot thickens]
