On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances (nautical miles and tenths), courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record State of the Sea.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea column.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae, volcanic, and seismic activity should be reported in the forum.
The names of US Navy and Coast Guard ships met should be noted. This gives the science team a chance to compare weather readings. You can include all ships mentioned in a single entry without a time or any additional data.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.

See Shenandoah: general for some general background and discussion.
See Shenandoah: examples for a quick introduction to transcribing or a refresher.

See Transcribing Guide to learn how to transcribe the data.

January 1, Mollendo, Peru:

More excitement the first day than the entire 1880 log. 8-)

Mid to 4AM:
Celebrated the opening of the New Year by striking an extra eight bells, and the band marching about the deck playing "Auld lang-syne", "Shenandoah March", and other selections, ending with a cornet solo: "Peek-a-boo".

I can't find any information concerning the "Shenandoah March", however the folk song "Shenandoah" was popular at the time. Maybe they were performing a march arrangement of the song.

:D :D :D

Don't disparage the log from 1880. It's my favourite of all the 244 that we've done in Phase VI.   She was anchored for 8,125 hours!!!

January 2 is spread across three images because of inserts.

Event page

Morning weather
https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorag ... 36-074.JPG

Evening weather
https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorag ... 36-075.JPG

I skipped the event page because of nothing there to transcribe and saved two xml files containing the weather data.

January 28 at Coquimbo, Chile

4PM to 8PM:
J.H.O. Donnell by order of the Comd'g Officer confined (solitary) on bread and water for five days: Report; calling John Ford the coxswain of the first whaleboat a sucker, and applying to him other opprobrious and tantalizing epithets in ridicule of the performance of his duty.

My first seismic event to transcribe.

10:15PM
quite a shock from an earth quake to place, passing in a southerly direction.

8-) 8-) 8-)

I'm just hoping that all our seismic events are well removed from us in space and time.

Yes, it's been a long time since the last earthquake that was strong enough to feel here. I suspect we're overdue.
