Muster Rolls of U.S.S. Kearsarge 1875-1879

On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances (nautical miles and tenths), courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record State of the Sea.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea column.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae, volcanic, and seismic activity should be reported in the forum.
The names of US Navy and Coast Guard ships met should be noted. This gives the science team a chance to compare weather readings. You can include all ships mentioned in a single entry without a time or any additional data.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.

See Kearsarge: general for some general background and discussion.
See Kearsarge: examples for a quick introduction to transcribing or a refresher.

See Transcribing Guide to learn how to transcribe the data.

All done! Just 15 days, during which she went to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and was decommissioned.
But they kept taking full WR until the very end!

One oddity: On this page, the AM temperature readings are way, WAY too high for New England winter:

My best guess is that the logkeeper accidentally copied values from some other day, somehow.
Just when you think you've seen it all...

Is this the shortest one you've ever done, Michael?

No. These are the number of lines in my files. Some of these were for Kevin, and they are just noon positions. If I remember, Atka just had a few hours around one or two sightings of ice, and that's probably the case for the two Rush files. So, Burton Island 1946 is the shortest with four days in December, Brazos 1944 had 12 days in June, Chelan 1932 is second with 14 days in May, and your Kearsasrge was #3.

Brazos really doesn't count. It was a special case for Kevin and it has just Baro, Dry and Wet when it was in harbor at Adak or Attu. Blackhawk and Cuyama were the two other ships that I just got those same data for that one year. All the files the transcribers have worked on have WX in the file name, and Ice if there is any ice reported. Those like Rush that have just Ice in the name, have no weather data. The weather data were collected in Phase III, and I transcribed those files later just for Ice and positions. I was doing all sorts of little tests and projects for Kevin at the start of the Arctic Weather phase of OW.
