Re: Alaskan Place Names -- Discussion
Of course! The Balboa Bay has few coverage on topoview, but fortunately the Cab station appears on the margin of a 1983 map... its the northern point of the Lefthand Bay. I've mixed two maps in the following image. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53524515024_20887190eb_b.jpg I've added the stati...

Re: Interesting Log Entries
i guess many member of the crew are just interested in the wage, and selection procedures being pretty quick for lower generic ratings "you want this job? yes / no"... there was surely plenty of available manpower and no specific skills needed, maybe just previous experience (with few deta...

Re: Alaskan Place Names -- Discussion
Looking at the maps available on usgs topoview the light was surely present 1951 to 1989, and has disappeared at some time between 1989 and 2020. Looking at noaa charts, the light is absent in 1992 , is present since 1925 and it wasn't existing in 1916 . Have not digged furtherly as we're capable to...

Re: Interesting Log Entries
The whole period Thetis is under major repairs at San Francisco is awesome... she stay moored there about an year, and basically all the other Revenue Cutter ships are using her as a trashcan for old material, and, i strongly suspect, unwanted crewmen, while taking away all the good things (launches...

Re: Alaskan Place Names -- Discussion
It should be the triangulation station just over Slavna Point... in the two 1983 maps i've found it's named "Slope" but it should definitely be that one. Added to geonames and our db as Slope, with alternate name Slop: https://www.geonames.org/12719884/slope.html in position 55.06252, -162...

I've just answered in the Alaskan discussion thread regarding one of the various Seal Rock, and realized i really was curious to check again the same-name places we have in the database... here's the current score for all places for which we have more than 5 references. I know, our absolute favorite...

Re: Alaskan Place Names -- Discussion
Hi studentforever! Seal Rock (1) is the one just below Sanak Island (54.29619, -162.59102), there's no current light there and i think there never was. I've checked a few maps just to be sure, but also the link is not about that area. The modern noaa chart in the link you provided is probably mentio...

Re: Alaskan Place Names -- Discussion
I've had no issues with the site, and i'm mainly using firefox, maybe just expired certificates that got fixed. Cape Kuyuyukak is actually on geonames: https://www.geonames.org/5866971/cape-kuyuyukak.html position 56.89744, -156.828 It was a little (few hundred meters) off place but was definitely t...

Re: Alaskan Place Names -- Discussion
Just added the new alternate name to database and to geonames. Thanks! When dealing with Russian names, there's a wide range of transliterations to English... the ending -ov (-ов in cirillic) can become -of, -off, -ow, even in native's last names, maps, books and whatsoever. The cape was named by Ru...

The Fra' Mauro map is just awesome... incidentally i've read about it just a couple of weeks ago. I've recently bought and started reading "The Atlas of Atlases" by Philip Parker, and of course that map couldn't be missing... it's one of the most beautiful that have survived from that peri...

Re: Alaskan Place Names -- Discussion
I think it's because Wolf Point is less and less an existing point... the island on which it was is practically submerged, not sure it's still a current addressable feature. I've fixed on geonames though, as on the very last usgs map (2020) the eastern extremity of the former Walrus Island the point...

For a complete change of theme, Matteo found this map when he was helping me with some obscure place references. He thought it might 'give me a smile' - it did! https://www.davidrumsey.com/luna/servlet/detail/RUMSEY~8~1~271614~90045485:false-pass?annotIds=360786639%2C360786637 It was not from me th...

Re: Alaskan Place Names -- Discussion
Hello studentforever and Stuart! I've located four of the five mentioned stations and got a candidate for the fifth one. Unfortunately there are both Doc and Doe triangulation stations on Deer Island, but the Doe one is on the southwestern coast, shortly north of Bent Cape, so Doc is definitely the ...
