Re: US (non-Alaskan) Place Names -- Discussion
@Gordon: You're very welcome! Sorry i could not totally exclude the whistle buoy 1A, if they dropped the log quite later than i imagined it can still be a candidate and also the "normal" turning point when approaching San Pedro due to the kelp patch surrounding the point... it's one of tho...

Re: US (non-Alaskan) Place Names -- Discussion
I agree municipal wharf being Broadway Pier... its not named in this 1922 map but it's the only one making sense and Pier 1, north of it and more or less the only other possible candidate, was not existing at the time. I've added the alternate Municipal Wharf to geonames and our database (Broadway P...

Re: US (non-Alaskan) Place Names -- Discussion
Perfect! I've added the two buoys to our database (number 1 was already present, we've almost the whole green side of the channel :D). Can feel you about the laptop... I'm mainly working on a laptop as well but had to install a little usb hub in order to use a proper keyboard and, more important, a ...

Re: US (non-Alaskan) Place Names -- Discussion
Glad to have located that light... my grasp of English is far worse than yours! I always assumed the two terms to be more or less synonyms with little differences, so i had not realized the issue was indeed with the term the logkeeper used. Regarding the buoys, i suppose you're referring to the two ...

Re: US (non-Alaskan) Place Names -- Discussion
On page 42 can't see the light being referenced... Berth 92 on municipal dock should be along municipal pier 1, which is at the entrance of channel leading to main channel and the turning basin. This 1920 map shows the municipal pier 1 in its southwestern part, and the long breakwater, with the ligh...

Re: Alaskan Place Names -- Discussion
We have both the cape and the light on db, maybe i've not updated the reference thread yet, i think the point or the light (or both) came out quite recently. Will do soon... thread was last updated 26 January, its not that much, but it's indeed been a while and we have added several places to it in ...

Re: US (non-Alaskan) Place Names -- Discussion
I've added all of them to db and, when missing, to geonames, thanks!
For Anacapa whistle buoy, it was there even in 1876! Must have become less and less useful since the lighthouse was built in 1912 and has disappeared sometime between the 20s and the 40s

Re: Alaskan Place Names -- Discussion
I think i have to give up on this one... no map I've been able to find report "Tag" (also looked for Jag, Jay, Tay), the only station with a close name is Turn, which is indeed at the head of bay. Looking at the maps there was also a sand promontory at the mouth of the lagoon which does no...

Re: Alaskan Place Names -- Discussion
Hey no worries! They're not so hard to locate, and up to now i think just one was missing from the modern (1955, 1963, 1983 and 1988) maps of topoview (https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/topoview/viewer/), glad to pinpoint all the stations Pioneer encountered and you want to locate! Grav is shortly north of Kno...

Re: Alaskan Place Names -- Discussion
Absolutely!
Its on the eastern side of the promontory where Pavlof Bay is more narrow, shortly north of Cape Tolstoi and 2 Pinnacle Rocks:
I've added it to geonames (position 55.38416, -161.51508) and to our db. Thanks!

Re: US (non-Alaskan) Place Names -- Discussion
Thanks Gordon!
Both added to database. I've moved North Point a little southeast on geonames as, looking at the various maps, the place is more properly located at the end of North Point Street (it makes sense!) where it met Kearney Street.

Re: Interesting Log Entries
USRC Thetis 20 September 1900 , in one of the countless watches spent repairing and upgrading ship we can read something that just gave me the creeps ... Plumbers lining dressers in galley, fitting galley range, lining after end and top of galley with asbestos [ asbestus in log ] and galvanized iron...

Re: Chat
Regarding bots you see online, no worries... usually they're just search engine spiders (automated, yet far from intelligent) indexing forum pages. Completely agree with arboggs on AI, at least at their current state, i tried with a few tricky historical questions and both chatgpt and bard came out ...

Re: Canadian Place Names -- Discussion
They must have been hurrying to return home :D it's the first time i see a light vessel mentioned without its name! There was just that one in the area so it's hard to make mistakes (the Umatilla Reef one is far to the south and its not encountered when going to Seattle) but I've always found the na...

Re: Canadian Place Names -- Discussion
British Columbia maps and places can be a little more complicated to find (no topoview or noaa), but Pioneer is fortunately pretty close the border and in a quite well known area. Also they are keeping good record of course and patent log changes and so we know they were 5.8 miles abeam Pachena Ligh...

Re: Alaskan Place Names -- Discussion
Looking at topoview and noaa charts, light was removed sometime in the 1990s and was there at least since 1921 (missing in 1918, no info in between). I've added it to geonames (position 55.29042, -159.88056) and to our database. I've also corrected Cape Wedge position itself... since it was among th...

Re: Alaskan Place Names -- Discussion
Yep a Light was present there from 1939 (oldest map i found showing it... in 1921 it wasn't present, but found nothing in between) to quite recently, in 1983 ... on topoview it's still there in 1988 and no more in a 1989 noaa chart, so it was surely on that promontory at least 1939-1988 I've added P...
