Re: Canadian Place Names -- Discussion

You're too kind :D
Don't think there's something as a medal, but I'm a level3 editor if that distinction still exist, which means i can move pretty everything around (most important places, and sensible ones, were locked from edits by newbies and lower level users) 8-)

Re: US (non-Alaskan) Place Names -- Discussion

Added to the database and reworked a little the places we had in the bay, Point San Luis was one of the first we added in the database (#126) so it was quite off place and it included the light in its notes, i've now splitted the two.

Thanks gordon!

Re: Canadian Place Names -- Discussion

I've added all to the database. Thanks! Agree with Michael both for Lawson Light being current Herbert Reefs Light and for the gas buoy... there's another candidate north of the shoals, but BC is always a pain for historical maps, so i'd go for the most probable one being our best guess. For Idol Po...

It will be interesting dont worry!
Also i think the east coast is a little less covered in the database, so more chances for adding new places to it!

Re: Alaskan Place Names -- Discussion

Google maps imagery is very indistinct in the area, but fortunately bing maps has good closeups. The light is active (the pdf is from 2024) and present on fishing app nautical chart. I've added Cape Ommaney Light, with Wooden Island Light as an alternate name, both to geonames (position 56.16027, -1...

Re: Canadian Place Names -- Discussion

Yeah it's always an issue linking things inside pdfs, the page number is sufficient :D

I've just added Walker Island Light with alternate name Camp Island Light to the database (and slightly moved island position as it was a little off place), thanks!

Re: US (non-Alaskan) Place Names -- Discussion

Definitely!
I'm gonna add all the alternate names to the database, i think we already have all major islands and several of those old names, but will double check everything and add what is missing

Thanks EShane!

Re: US (non-Alaskan) Place Names -- Discussion

Oh well its not a big deal, its fun to locate these places, and im giving a hand at least to other editors and, more in general, to the material that will appear on NHN... so im always glad to give a hand :D

I really appreciate the thought however, thanks!

Re: US (non-Alaskan) Place Names -- Discussion

@Gordon: You're very welcome! Sorry i could not totally exclude the whistle buoy 1A, if they dropped the log quite later than i imagined it can still be a candidate and also the "normal" turning point when approaching San Pedro due to the kelp patch surrounding the point... it's one of tho...

Re: US (non-Alaskan) Place Names -- Discussion

I agree municipal wharf being Broadway Pier... its not named in this 1922 map but it's the only one making sense and Pier 1, north of it and more or less the only other possible candidate, was not existing at the time. I've added the alternate Municipal Wharf to geonames and our database (Broadway P...

Re: US (non-Alaskan) Place Names -- Discussion

Perfect! I've added the two buoys to our database (number 1 was already present, we've almost the whole green side of the channel :D). Can feel you about the laptop... I'm mainly working on a laptop as well but had to install a little usb hub in order to use a proper keyboard and, more important, a ...
