Re: Ashuelot (1877) — Discussion: Questions, Comments, and Coordination

Because of the El Nino project, I'll start working on 1877, most likely doing the entire year.

Re: Lancaster (1886): links, questions, comments, coordination, ...

June is complete.

The log for the last day of June listed punishments for 13 men and a list of a different 20 men to be released from confinement as prisoners at large. The log for June was full of long entries concerning fighting, drunkenness, AWOL, deserters, punishments, and confinement.

I will ...

On June 29 the ship somehow set sail from Cape Town, South Africa. They left many deserters behind, while on board a couple dozen sailors were confined for drunkenness, or awaiting court martial for various other offenses. Altogether at least 30 or 40 men not performing their usual duties.

May 10 off the east coast of Madagascar:

5:50 PM
in heaving the log the rail of the starboard Hotchkiss platform came unshipped and Henry Knights (os) fell overboard. Stopped the ship and sent life boat which picked up the man's cap and the life bouy, but no trace of the man could be found ...

Re: Chat

It's okay for me now. My guess is they are doing some sort of development on the GeoNames site that they need to test briefly with a developer version of Google Maps and sometimes forget to switch back to the regular Google Maps when they're done. Either that, or I just happen to be unlucky enough ...

Re: Chat

I occasionally go over to Zooniverse to get some variety, but don't stay very long. I get frustrated at how tedious they tend to be, often transcribing one data cell and then going to the next screen to continue with the next field. The point Michael makes about becoming familiar with a log keeper's ...

Re: Chat

Is it just me and my computer, or is everyone having a problem lately with the GeoNames connection to Google Maps getting the message, "This page can't load Google Maps correctly.", and then displaying a development version of the map that is very difficult to use? I've had this happen temporarily ...

March is done. Sailed from Madagascar to Zanzibar Island. Too bad the Navy mission wasn't more like that of the Coast Guard cutters in Alaska. There must be so many interesting stories that don't get recorded in the logs.

I started working on this log while the forum was down. January and February are done. The ship crossed the Atlantic from Uruguay to South Africa, and has just arrived in Madagascar.

Re: Transcriber Weather

According to the local weather service and radar, it has now warmed up and transitioned to rain down here near sea level. When I look out the window it is snowing the hardest since this began and is a couple inches deep in the yard. It may be good that I missed my appointment. By the time I would ...

Re: Transcriber Weather

It's after 4 PM now and has been snowing non-stop. I missed my appointment. Not because of road conditions. The streets are slushy, but still easily driveable.

What happened was that as soon as I got in the car I turned on the wipers because it was a wet snow and I thought it would be quicker and ...
