In general, if you are looking for place names or for maps and other useful references, you should go to Alaskan Place Names -- Reference.

You can use this topic to search for information that has not yet been added to the Reference topic.

You can also use this topic to ask for help with reading an Alaskan place name or locating the place.
Give us a link to the log page(s) where it is mentioned and tell us approximately where it occurs on the page(s).

Note: Place names include lighthouses.

If you have information about a place name or find a useful reference, please help everyone by contributing it to this topic.

When contributing place names, try to provide as many of the following as possible:
  • Name in log
  • Latitude and Longitude (preferably in decimal format with a minimum of one decimal place - four decimal places is the preferred format)
  • Current name (if different)
  • Link to more information
  • Also, in case of problems, a link to the log page(s) where it is mentioned would be helpful
Don't worry if you can't supply all the information. Your link to the page will enable others to search for the missing information.
(You can save us even more work by using the template provided, but that is strictly optional.)

Any kind of geographical information in this topic is always welcome. A Google Map covering a specific ship or area is a good example of a much appreciated contribution. We will collect them in the corresponding Reference topic.

It's a fascinating yet pretty unknown part of history for most people... long before GPS satellites (Unalga II took part in the building of one of them in 1946) these stations would provide pretty accurate radio positioning.
The last Loran-C systems were still active in the 1990s. See also wiki page.

Oujanok Island

June 29th 1884 the Thomas Pope reaches Sanak Island. For the next 24 hours she travels approximately SouthWest and then reports the Island of Oujganok bearing west and 2 miles distant. Sadly her Longitude for the 30th June is incomplete but likely to be around 164 degrees, the latitude is given as 55 degrees 46 minutes W.

Given her route the next island from Sanak would be Ugamak Island. One of the historical names for Ugamak Island is 'Ougamok'. If the pronunciation of the 'g' is soft, then it's very highly likely that Oujganok is Ugamak Island. Please can we enter 'Ouganok' as an alternative for 'Ugamak'?

Ugamak Island
54.21222, -164.82083N

And see the next two posts...

Looking at the g in strong on the 5pm line, I wonder if it is a g rather that a j (with the dot belonging to the time above)?

By golly - you're right. Nice find. It is a 'g' so I've amended my post above.
I wonder how we could get Geonames updated to show this historical name version? I'll look into that.
